I know this is not a new approach but I wanted to share with you my Pinterest traffic test case study.

    Objective:

To test if can monetise a site using Pinterest traffic.

    Approach:

Create a Pinterest account with board pins that link through to a niche website that has Amazon Affiliate product links. As this is targeting Pinterest traffic, the niche must be targeted towards women aged 25-44. The site will also target the US market (49 million vs. 2 million in UK).
    Approach relies on followers/re-pins.

    Tools:

Ninja Pinner automated following/repin software – cost $67/£39 for unlimited Pinterest account licence.. I am not a Ninja Pinner affiliate and all these activities can be done with this tool – it just helps J

    Plan:

    1. Select target niche – DONE
    2. Choose 10 keywords – this will be used to create 10 boards – STILL TO DO
    3. Create Pinterest account using a female persona (i.e. name, profile, pic) – DONE (May 20)
    4. Create 4 “generic” female interest boards (e.g. hairstyles) and re-pin to these using Ninja Pinner – DONE
      1. Board 1: 77 pins
      2. Board 2: 19 pins
      3. Board 3: 103 pins
      4. Board 4: 161 pins
      5. By creating a generic account and boards I could always expand into different niches if I build start to build a reasonable number of pinners
    5. Follow people in niche by searching for “created board” keywords (e.g. hairstyles) and using Ninja Pinner to pin image to specific board then auto-pin follow – STARTED
      1. Followers: 33
      2. Following: 382
      3. NOTE: Ninja Pinner has a handy unfollow feature so I can run this and it will remove people I’m following but have not followed me back in say 5 days. This will hopefully keep me followers/following ratio low
    6. Use Ninja Pinner to auto-like 51 pins by again search for “keyword” images – DONE

The purpose of steps #3 to #6 is to create a non-spammy Pinterest persona and the account is now just over 1 month old.

As far as the niche site is concerned, the plan is:
    1. Purchase an expired/aged domain in this niche – DONE (site is 11 years old. Has a PA/DA of 38/26 and a URL Trust Flow of 18. Has 16 linking domains. Cost $2.38/£1.40 through Go Daddy using a coupon code)
    2. Host and add WordPress. As this is going to be a picture based site I will use the Pinterest-style theme Pinboard
    3. Set up post categories for each of the 10 keywords and add 1 picture/description post to each category. These will not be pinned.
    4. Track using Google Analytics

Next step is to get Pinterest ready for the niche site re-pins.
    1. Create 10 boards based on each of the 10 keywords selected. Keep these private until they have at least 5 pins each. Use NinjaPinner to re-pin/re-follow niche images
    2. When board is ready with 5 images make board public
    3. Continue to add follow pinners at around 20 per day (don’t want to look too spammy!)

Finally, find some higher value products on Amazon and add picture/description posts, 2 per product category. Pin these to the 10 niche boards. So I will have 20 pins with links back to my niche site posts that then have Amazon Affiliate links.

A side benefit of this plan could be that the niche site also starts to rank for some keywords and that is why I have chosen an expired/aged domain in the same niche.

    Total cost: $69.38 / £40.40
    Sales: $0 / £0
    Profit / Loss: -$69.38 / -£40.40

I will keep this thread updated every couple of days.

Okay latest update (work completed today).

Hosted site (cheap dollar hosting) and installed WP, then changed theme to Pinboard (Pinterest style theme). Added a short About Me page with profile picture and added a Contact page. Installed 404 redirection plugin to capture link juice from old pages.

Next I wanted to fill the site out a bit more with scraped content before adding the actual "money" posts. So I used Get ArticlesLite to scrape niche articles then chose 5 relevant articles and spun at 3rd word level using BestFreeSpinner. Checked 100% uniqueness using smallseotools plagiarism checker. Articles were quite readable.

Posted 5 posts to site. Included image for each post (with keyword alt tag). Added a relevant YouTube video to the first post. Installed Google Video Sitemap plugin and pinged Google (to try to get site indexed faster) - post with video indexed in under 2 hours!
Added Pinterest Pin It Button plug in to allow easy repin of images.

Next step is to choose 10 product target keywords and start to write "money" posts.

Following. I tried using Pinterest to generate traffic some time back but failed miserably (very few clicks and 0 conversions even though I was offering demographic-appropriate products).

Hope you do better than me :)
