[Pics + video] Bluetooth marketing - The Bum Method! Straight from my office window

Ok so, there was a discussion going on about the wedding of William and Kate. And when I thought about it, it made sense to me to exploit such a massive event by Bluetooth marketing.

My suggestion was to set up several mobile BT station from which you send messages to all BT enabled phones.
To test this method I quickly came up with a proof of concept test that looks like this:



This is the technical part:

• I used a HTC smart with BT Spammer installed.
• Then I installed MyMobiler on my PC to control my phone with the PC.
• Within BT Spammer I created a VC card (a contact cart) with my facebook address. The message the phone owner sees is 'From Mark: Hi connect with me on Facebook!'
• I took my food strainer thingy and tied my phone to it. This acts as a directional antenna. Basically it channels all the searching power to one direction.
• Then I took the strainer with the cellphone and mounted it onto my photography tripod.
• I happen to live close to a busy crossroad so I have people in two lanes waiting for the red light all the time. (This is when I send them my message)
• I opened my office window and setup the whole thing so that the antenna with my phone points to the crossroad.
• Now I start the software and what happens next is in this video:

This small proof of concept allows me to send around 5 messages per minute. That is 300 per hour. Not bad huh?

Tomorrow is a celebratory day over here. We celebrate a dead queens birthday. Anyway, I will test a lot of things through out the day and get back with results right here.

Maybe you know any soft what can do the same without the phone but using BT on the Laptop? Since you can get 250meter Usb Doungles and that's way better then using phone!

I just got one friend request out of a few hundred messages sent.
I am currently literally 'targeting' (pointing to) cars waiting for the traffic light. That is like the worst possible target because they are preoccupied with driving and are coming and going within a minute or two. I bet that a lot of my messages are not received.
So yeah, once I refine this I think this has potential

The range is awesome. I haven't measured but from my office window with my phone alone, I find no other devices.
A quick calculation with the Pythagorean theorem:
I am 5 floors up (150ft?) and the traffic lights are around 150ft away from my building entrance.
So that equals 150square + 150square = 45k
So the distance from my window to the traffic lights is the root of 45k=212 ft.
Pretty good distance, the only thing is that this strainer acts as a directional antenna and I suspect that the beam I am sending out is less than 12degrees wide = less square feet coverage.

If you liked this, you should have been there when I got a call yesterday, I was holding my phone with the strainer attached to it against my ear. Talk about a weird sight

I know a lot of software that can be run from a laptop and I would have used it but I don't have a bluetooth dongle. So I wanted to do a proof of concept first, seeing of the whole idea would work.
Monday morning when the stores open, I am getting myself a simple Class III dongle and I will build a double biQuad antenna for it.
This should give me a 40-45 degree beam and a lot more distance (I hope to get 600-700ft).

Next things to do:

1. Get a bluetooth dongle for the PC
2. Build a double biQuad antenna for large distance and wider beam (40-45 degrees)
3. Get some bluetooth marketing software
4. Target people waiting for the bus on a busstop. They will be stationary for at least a few minutes and a new bus gets there every 7 minutes. So every 7 minutes I will have a new supply of prospects.

Btw. let's say that this works. This is just like Facebook, you need to pinpoint target your prospects. Really understand their state of mind at the exact time you are marketing.
Let's say that you are getting a BT station in the city center on saturday night. You can send out promotions for clubs to all drunk people wandering the streets looking for the next place to go.
Imagine you are drunk and looking for the next club or bar to go to and you get this on your phone:
Headline: 'You get free entrance to Club 7 TONIGHT!'
Body: 'If you show this message to our bouncer, he will let you and your friends in at no cost! Only tonight!'

I can't believe that I have never seen this happen before.
I am so selling this to bar and club owners...

Imagine you are drunk and looking for the next club or bar to go to and you get this on your phone:

Body: 'If you show this message to our bouncer, he will let you and your friends in at no cost! Only tonight!'

Yeah I am glad I was alone in my office. I was so excited when I thought of this setup that I didn't realize what a mess it was until the phone rang

Welcome back Maruk. Btw, did you ever find time to test this with pc software, if you did, what software you used and how did it go?

ha nice, although targeting drivers is not very sensible.. :/

A busy place / event would be best. e.g. at a concert send message to all with a cpa offer "WIN TICKETS TO CONCERT" will convert better.

Does anyone know of an iPhone bluetooth spammer?

BMW at its best, i wonder if your phone provider would get pissed about it

There are major problems with bluetooth spamming
mainly most new phones do not allowing incoming messages as the bluetooth is
switched off until the user operates it, this applies to nearly all new phones
blackberries, HTC, Iphone etc.

So its a bit dead in the water, trust me I tested it years ago for several months
and got next to nothing
