PHPBUILT's Idiot-Proof Guide to Authority Site Building

Not open for further replies.
Here is a continuation of concepts related to the orginal post. The following mostly has to do with ranking and penalties. I know I called this a how-to-build-an-authority-site thread but its sort of grown into more of a how-to-get-penalties-removed thread. That's not such a bad thing -- most people produce penalized content so getting this info out there will be extremely helpful to you all.

The gist of things thus far is do not backlink while you troubleshoot your content.

Specifically, here's the issue. When you throw backlinks at something, it ranks. Imagining that you're playing a game of darts -- you get 100 points when you hit the center. When you haven't backlinked, that center cork of the dartboard is very small ... and you can adjust your content to where it hits the board and scores well.

Now the problem with backlinks is that it makes the board bigger. This larger dartboard, it is easy to hit it with a dart and "score" -- within a couple days you're in the teens, now yo're top ten, horray! But that ranking can be deceptive. As many SEOs experience, the rankings you gain at the beginning leave, it becomes a "google dance", or you get a notice of unnatural backlinks, etc. ... and the end result is that shortcut of getting fast automated links didn't work so well.

You ever have that happen to you before? Almost every SEO has. I'm going to tell you exactly what happens when this happens, and give you a method to avoid it. Because its time to start making some money, its time to start backlinking -- we can't wait on that forever.

---------------------------------------------------------------
EVERYTHING YOU READ AFTER THIS POINT MAY OR MAY NOT BE BULL****
---------------------------------------------------------------

Disclaimer time. The following is what I've perceived after years of troubleshooting content. I can't prove any of it, but I believe it makes sense and it coincides with the results I see when getting stuff to rank. So here it goes.

Did you ever notice that Google favors older pages? When you're talking about evergreen niches and stuff that's "not new", Google tends to give favor to the older indexed content. I strongly believe that age is a factor that Google uses as one of its 200+ factors in ranking pages. This age factor applies to content, and it applies to backlinks. Every time Google's bot visits your page and notices that yes, that content is still there, the links to that page still exist, it adds the ever-so-slightest +ranking to that page. This goes for both the page and its content, as well as when Google notices a link to a page. Aged links leading to an aged page are favored with Google.

This can work for you, but it can also work against you. When it comes to optimization -- balance is the key. There comes a point with Google that their algorithm says "Ok bud, this page of yours is reeeally optimized for your keyword here. That's just not natural, you've got a penalty now."

I think we all realize that, when a page gets too many exact anchors, it does surprisingly well, better, top 10, top 5 -- poof. Its gone. Perhaps it isn't even in the top 1000 results now. Whats up with that? Glad you asked, I'll tell you.

Google cached your page. It was keyword stuffed, which in terms of raw ranking = POWER. I've seen 9% density rank really well on extremely competitive terms, because this stuffing is power to rank for a term. Google cached the backlinks to your site -- all exact anchors -- POWER. Your site has an extreme amount of power to rank, unbalanced power -- and it is ranking well. Then it disappears. What happens is this -- Google cached your page, saw its links and applied its algorithm ... now you have power, power enough to rank really well. And then 2 or 3 days, maybe a week later, Google checks your website out again (same content ... +age modifier) now you have even more power. Google sees the same links to your page, they've aged (+age modifier), now your site is even MORE powered up. You quit backlinking a month ago, yet the work you did is still powering-up your website as it ages -- and it finally snaps.

Your website is like a cup, and optimization with backlinks and on-page content is like water. The higher your PA/DA (and PR), the bigger your glass is and the more water your page/site can hold. When your cup is full, it ranks. Even a small cup that is full (simply with onpage optimization) will rank at least in the top 100 -- even if the term is extremely cdompetitive. If you blast a page with exact anchors AND have it keyword stuffed at 5% keyword density, for a very short period of time it can hold a lot of water.

Periodically (maybe once a week, once every other week), Google runs a set of algorithms on your site to verify how much water you've got and how big your cup is. If you have too much water for your cup, you don't rank. Here's the bad part though, that water doesn't spill out. Your cup sits there, flooded under water and unusable (penalized), until that excess water is taken away. At this point, when your cup is too full -- you will have a negative modifier applied to your site, which ranges from perhaps -10 to -250, depending on how much under water it is.

This is why you can make a page at, say, 1.3% keyword density and 25% exact incoming anchors, and it ranks just fine for six months. After six months, it finally trips the overpowered, overoptimized algorithm -- because your page has aged and incoming anchors have aged to the point that now they're too much, whereas when you first made them they were fine. (You have more water, but you didn't work on making your cup any bigger by getting quality links and higher PA/DA). This is also why going in and cranking that keyword density from 1.3% down to .9% instantly gets your rankings back -- you reduced the extreme optimization that page had and it is in the ranking zone again.

This is also why someone makes a page at .7% density and 25% exact incoming anchors, and it doesn't rank at all, you forget about it -- but 6 months later its suddenly ranking. When you first made that page, it did not yet qualify for ranking because it was too weak, and not optimized enough yet so that it hit that sweet spot where it can rank. After 6 months of your content aging and your incoming anchors aging, finally that page is in the "rank zone" and does well.

This is why it is imperitive to always audit your site's ranking. You need to know when a page is acting goofy and not ranking anymore. It could be that the content having aged, and the incoming anchors having aged, have overoptimized your page. Lower your keyword density on your under-performing pages. By auditing, you keep all your content passing Google's algirithm with flying colors.

Now when you throw links at a page, obviously it does better. The problem is using the links as a crutch can hurt your site -- because your article that wasn't written very well ranks #9 with a bunch of backlinks. You think thats wonderful -- and you decide to link even more to it to get it ranking better. The problem is, if it were written properly in the first place, instead of #9 it might have been #3. You'll never be able to judge that if you're backlinking from the git-go.

Now of course, you can just make your cup bigger. How you do that? Get quality links. Up the pool of links to your site from different class-A / class-C IP addresses (the more the better). Get links from sites with higher PA/DA. This increases your own PA/DA, and PA/DA is a good description of what the "cup" is.

Thus far this thread has been about how to top-off your cup without making it any bigger. In future posts I'll fully explain about making your cup a super-sized slurpee. But for now, I'm emphasizing the balance of content -- because if you get your site fine-tuned with no incoming links, by the time you actually do get links its going to be a smooth, easy-ranking operation.

So here is a way to summarize everything above. You want to fine tune your content so, as you're playing darts, you hit that 100-point dead center without any other influence (backlinks). If you do this, when you finally get links, you will rank #1 much easier. If, however, you're throwing backlinks at it before Google even has cached the page -- you have no idea how good your content was. It now might be #8 -- and you don't know if would have been #1 with better content, or if being #8 is the best you could do with the backlinks you got. You're basically testing that your airplane can fly before you throw it in the air.

I troubleshoot content until it ranks. The above is my perception of what Google is doing. I have no idea if they actually do everything mentioned above, but if you treat your site like everything above is true -- you'll rank really well.

There's a problem now. You want to fine tune your site's content, but you also want to start getting links! How do you do that? Here's how I do it.

Once you start backlinking to your site, all new content will be vetted on a secondary domain. On another domain, you put the fresh content. There you can test the content and get it ranking well without backlinks. When it comes in at a place where you're happy with the result, you canonical the page to a new location (your money site) that has many links and a growing PA/DA. This content then does even better. Doing it this way, you can start backlinking to your money site now and still have the opportunity to test your content's ability to rank without links. I will start doing this on my current money site after I have 50 pages of content on it -- because it is starting to bring some good money in and I want that to start getting backlinks to the site fairly soon.

-----------------------------------------------
************ MY CURRENT MONEY SITE ************
-----------------------------------------------

I started this like November 22nd or so. I'm really busy on other projects and my job -- so I haven't done anything on this site except write the articles and audit pages approximately 3 times each. I thought I had written 30 articles for it, but some weren't published so my actual live article count is only 23.

I know for a fact that my particular industry averages around 15 cents a visitor (with the products I target, their price range and with my site setup & how well it converts). Currently my site is right on track earning just that much now that its gotten over 1000 visitors.

profit2.jpg

profit1.jpg

So as you can see from above ... is it worthwhile to write articles when you're averaging $322 per article (and haven't even backlinked yet)? Of course! Someday I will backlink and those pages will actually earn a lot more. I have no interest in flipping this site for a $3834, but as-is thats what I figure its worth without additional effort.

Q question what is your tought in translating content from other websites to another language, no with google translator or some other software, but quality translation.

Will trip some penalty?

Would be better translate and rewrite?

And how would be possible to see if the website that published the translated content is under some penalty algo like the one you was describing before -10,-250.

Is there a conflict when the Domain name & the Blog Name has 1 word in common or is that problematic for On Page SEO ?

Man you're the best :) I'm sure you've helped and inspired so many people with this post.

Edit: That took a really long time to read :) But I enjoyed every minute of it and took a lot of notes!

Excellent write-up!

If after auditing a page and dropping the kw density to the right amounts, and the un-backlinked page still doesn't rank in top 1000, are there any other tweaks that can be done to the content to help it rank in top 100?

I have a few pages ranking without backlinks now, but there are a few that just won't rank no matter what keyword density I fix it to. I've tried 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 for the main keyword and made sure the 1-2 word keywords in them were within acceptable ranges.

This is a brand new site I'm testing it on and it currently has about 12 pages with 4 of them ranking.

Hard to say without seeing it. Sometimes you can have keywords burried on your site and quirk searchstatus doesn't find it. I was tweaking a site and confused as to why it didn't rank, then I realized there was this drop-down menu in the footer that mentioned the domain's keyword like 5 times in it. quirk searchstatus didn't pick up on it ... I just ripped it out and expect the page to be fixed now soon as Google updates their cache.

One thing to consider is your incoming anchors on your site. Is that page in the menu system? Does all 12 pages link to that page with exact anchor? If so that's overoptimizing the page. This is especially true of homepage when that anchor is burried in an H1 tag with the logo.

I don't SEO foreign language sites so I don't know.

Is there a conflict when the Domain name & the Blog Name has 1 word in common or is that problematic for On Page SEO ?

I think EMDs are extremely powered for their local markets. For instance, in one market I'm analyzing right now, the EMD for a foreign TLD is too powered too optimized for ranking in its own country, but it ranks well in the US (because that TLD isn't overpowered for the US market so its not overoptimized there).

On the other hand, the exact same EMD .com is penalized in the US market (because there, its overpowered), but in this foreign market, it is not penalized (because the .com isn't overpowering in that foreign market). Wielding an EMD is still an extremely powerful optimization within the local Google markets it applies to, and it takes a special effort to underoptimize an EMD so it is not penalized.

This translates somewhat to domains with keywords in it, but not EMDs. There is some boost to having the keyword in the EMD. In my opinion, these boosts are nothing special ... in fact they can be annoying when you trip into overoptimization because that keyword in the domain was more powered than you thought it was going to be. I'd much rather be dealing with a domain that is brandable but no keywords in it, because then I can optimize it without fussing with how much power its getting from the keyword in its domain. Don't get me wrong though, if I'm chasing after a super huge keyword and I have the EMD ... that is worth fussing over balancing the optimization.

Only 2 of the incoming links is exact, everything else is just long tail relevant words. I've stripped this wordpress site down to almost it's bare minimums. It almost looks like an html website.

Posting to find back to this thread, thanks phpbuilt.
I've got a lot of nice php solutions by you in the past, the spinner to name one :)

Hi PHPbuilt thank you for this thread. I'm trying to understand this part from your last post :

So you trying your content on different website and then you just redirect the pages you see are ranking to your money site ? I always was thinking that you can make Canonicalization only with the same URL for example http://example.com/reddress.html to be canonical to http://example.com/red-dress.html
Thanks

Cross-site cannonicalization works extremely well. It is near-instant transferring of rankings in Google from one domain to another, far faster and more efficient than a 301. The new cannon will be updated immediately after Google notices it, usually within 24 hours but maybe up to 48.

great post. ill read the whole thing sometime. I got partway through the introductory paragraph and realized something.

You speculate about keyword density and how if your anchor text matches your keyword you should decrease keyword density to avoid over optimization. I realize how much of internet marketing is guesswork and trial and error.

I also realize engineers at G could make a ton of side income just from selling the algorithm, not even to competitors trying to compete with G, just us blackhatters trying to trick the system.

im sure we could all come together and put together a substantial offer to G for there algorithm right?

Damn, I wish all people who build 600 pages to make 300$ per month read this :-)

What really astonishes me is your calculations! Planning to reach 15 cent from each visitor then achieving exactly what you expected!

Nominating this thread for a sticky and the best in 2013 :-D

Yep, I've been in this particular niche since 2008. I've flipped a few sites in this niche and just happen to know this is what it averages out to, based on my previous websites that I've long flipped a while ago. Only just now creating another site in this niche, but the conversion rates I fully expect to stay the same.

I guess I'll stick something in my sig for that soon, downloading the software for it. Not a bad idea hehe, I'll treat my wife out to dinner with it and she'll be more forgiving of the time I spend on BHW lol.

Nice new sign', get a drink on me. Bitcoin donation are great.

Btw where do you live ? South est asia as i can see on your picture ?

Few more question for you :

I plan to make a network private blog. My niche are electronic for example The way i see is :

1) buy some expired domain related content before if possible with some pr, installing wordpress or anything like that, and start bulding a huge blog related content talking about electronic generally, where i will put some target article who backlink my money website later on (Quality A grade writing everything manual)

2) setup some fresh new domain, with keywords on the URL. More targeted content. For example i will talk only about HDD, and one only about Screen, etc... (good quality writing)

3) Make some free web 2.0 who target blog i made before + some money site. Ultra targeted content, Talking for example about ONE brands of HDD. (random quality, best as possible)

4) push the web 2.0 with some tiers2 (random quality, do not really care about quality writing)

Do you think it is good enought ? of course i will try to not leave footprint etc... Do i need expired domain ? (seems yes for a powerful blog network)

Thanks to help me, thanks for your time, enjoy your drink

Thank you for answering my question before. I do have a new question though:
First question:
When you said that I should check the kw density by using the FF plugin and kw percentage under "body" then the "body" tab doesn't count the times the kw is in the title, url or description on the site. Don't these fluctuate the kw density of the page?

Second question:
If I want to rank for kw "gray love potion" then I need to have it around 1% but do I need to cut down the "gray love" and "love potion" to also 1,5% and then the individual words to 2% when I don't want to rank for them. I ONLY want to rank for the "gray love potion" Thanks!

Third question:
If I want to rank for two keywords on the same page, one is: "love potion awesome" and the second is "love potion uncool" then will it hurt me if I put both of the keywords in the title and description of the page?

Fourth question:
Let's say I have 20 sites that all have the exact same page (how-to quide for completing an offer). Because the page has always the same content, will it hurt my overall site ranking or will the page just not rank but doesn't affect my sites rankings.

That's a lot of questions but I hope you can answer them, thanks!

Thanks :) Philippines, Mindanao.

Fresh domains aren't worth it. I've created 1200 domain network on 125 class-c IP hosting and the links from these blogs were worthless. Expired domains will have PA and DA to pass along to your money site ... fresh domains pass nothing (unless you build them up with GSA, but even then its more fuss than worth it). Get an expired domain with an already existing decent non-spammed link portfolio for your own blog network. I'm doing a future post about this but I'll send you a PM spoiler.

3) Make some free web 2.0 who target blog i made before + some money site. Ultra targeted content, Talking for example about ONE brands of HDD. (random quality, best as possible)

This is good. I'll be mentioning this in a future post, but a good thing to do with web2.0s is use 0% exact anchors, this will allow you to use more exact anchors from your high PA/DA/PR blog network. Typically you'll want to link to your site with 20% exact keyword anchor, 40% partial-match keyword anchor and 40% nonsensical anchors (like "click here" or "more information"). Those nonsensical anchors will come from your web2.0s so your exact anchors can more heavily come from your blog network.

4) push the web 2.0 with some tiers2 (random quality, do not really care about quality writing)

Quality doesn't matter, GSA SER is a good option for this.

Do you think it is good enought ? of course i will try to not leave footprint etc... Do i need expired domain ? (seems yes for a powerful blog network)

Yep that's the plan. Only expired domains.

Thank you for answering my question before. I do have a new question though:

I'm making the assumption that you're going to have your exact keyword in your title and site description. So the 2% on single keywords, 1.5% on 2-keywords and 1% on 3+ keyword combos already take into consideration that your template will inject a keyword once or twice, and the title already has the keyword in it.

Yes, you need to keep 1.5% and 2% even if you don't want to rank for them. Penalty on a page isn't keyword specific ... if you get penalized on any of those keywords it will bring down the other references to those keywords.

In general, keyword-stuffed content is considered poor quality by Google, it doesn't matter if the stuffing is on your desired keywords or undesired keywords.

Third question:
If I want to rank for two keywords on the same page, one is: "love potion awesome" and the second is "love potion uncool" then will it hurt me if I put both of the keywords in the title and description of the page?

It won't hurt at all. You'll stick both in title (but no overlapping words in title) ... something like "make a love potion, both awesome and uncool", don't double up on keywords. On-page, love potion awesome should be 1% or less, love potion uncool will be 1% or less, love potion will be 1.5% or less, potion will be 2% or less. If you can't manage that, add more words or go for .5% on the 3+ keyword combos.

Your content will cannibilize each other, in that one will rank and the rest won't. My personal opinion is that content on your site that overlaps is redundant and does not help you whatsoever. The only exception is if you have 10 different articles, and then you do a top-10 list that briefly overlaps each of the 10, linking to them. But for the most part, I don't believe 100 similar articles on your site helps your overall site's rankings -- its wasted effort. You're better off targeting different but related keywords.

Hey PHPbuilt. Like 2-3 years ago, I used a software (still got it but dont use it) called Website Auditor. One of its main features was to analyze on-page metrics such as keyword density as an average on the top-ten results for a certain keyword and provide you with an average % to use within the body of the page you are trying to rank. This worked very well back then. The pages I worked on usually jumped from either N/A or Top 200 to page 2-5. After that I usually started the link building.

As I understand this software is still widely used but their definition of keyword density is different. For example, look at the following texts:

1. If you are looking for cheap web hosting then consider...
2. If you are looking for a cheap and affordable web hosting

According to their software (which I found very strange and not logical) keyword density for a phrase does not only apply that the words in the keyword phrase occurring after each other. The above texts would have the same keyword density for the keyword "cheap web hosting".

What are your thoughts about this? Thanks a lot for your valuable contribution. Definitely bookmarked! I added you on skype btw.

Read this earlier this month, applied your changes to my site, after about a week or two my rankings shot up for a high competition KW to around page 2-4 on Google from page 30~. My Adsense earnings basically doubled. Came back to give more thanks.
