PHPBUILT's Idiot-Proof Guide to Authority Site Building

PHP, thank you for taking the time to share all this with us.

Do you have any experience with web sites that got the manual penalty message for unnatural link building? Will those sites rank again is one deoptimize them?

Interlink between your articles at around 20% exact anchor, 40% related keyword but not exact, and 40% "click here" sort of stuff, but change that up very often, different anchor each time. I'd recommend that both on-site and off-site incoming anchor texts.

Is there an easy way to do this? I use a plugin called Seo Smart links but so far i've only ever used it to match 100% exact anchor for keywords.

Hi PHP:

Maybe I missed it or maybe someone else can answer this?

I see no mention of how to handle the meta descriptions and keywords in the AIO plugin. I also note that many of my competitors do not use any of these. My question is this: are the meta description and keywords necessary and will it throw off your keyword density if not done properly?

I had two domains that were penalized back in september for unnatural links. I used a high PR back link service that is on BHW and pointed the links directly at my website after being assured that the risk was basically nil. Anyway, I have gotten both of the manual penalties removed and they are ranking. Not as well as they used to, but I am building fresh content with this guide and all my new content is ranking just the way php said it would for low competition search terms. My home page is even making a huge comeback for its main keyword. This guide was a life saver for me, because I did not want to trash these two domains. Fortunately for me my traffic and sales on my store was not 100% driven by google, otherwise I would be flipping burgers 24 hours a day ;)

Thanks again phpbuilt for this awesome guide, and experience. I'm working my butt off creating quality content, but I suppose that's what I should have been doing in the first place, rather than trying to take short cuts.

Hmm not 100% sure on this so look it up, just Google it ... off the top of my head I just write the excerpt and the excerpt becomes the meta description. There should be an "excerpt" area on your wordpress post page. Let me know if its not doing that.

Still early for me here can't remember if this is done automatically or if I had to enable it somehow.

Not easy no. If you're going to make a successful authority site, your inner pages will link together where relevant, and not always exact. Its well worth continually auditing your website, making sure each page isn't penalized for your desired keywords and getting links to and from that page if you have newer relevant content to link to.

Hello PHPBuilt,

Sorry for my ignorance because I seem to not clear about your post. In addition, there are many pages that I couldn't catch up and read all of them.

I have some confusion about how to structure my site to better in on-site optimization.
I am using WordPress. Therefore, there are many things that I need to consider as following:

  1. Static Page for homepage OR Latest posts?
  2. Archive, Category, Author, Attachment and Tag pages - To put meta robots (no index, follow) or not to prevent duplication?
  3. If I use Static Page for homepage, do I need to add meta robots (no index, follow) to POINT 2 above or not?
  4. If I use Latest Posts for homepage, do I need to add meta robots (no index, follow) to POINT 2 above or not?
  5. To have breadcrumb or not?
  6. To have recent posts, comment, tag clouds or popular posts/comments widget or not?
  7. To have social sharing icons and related posts in single post or not?

I think some of these are in your OP, but I tried to re-read several times and still confused. If you don't mind adding more tips that I don't know it would be very great!

Thanks!

Sorry bud but if you can't read 8 pages of posts, you have no business in seo. Basically all of those questions have been answered. No spoon feeding.

Hello PHPBuilt,

Hello phpbuilt, love your thread and thank you for taking the time to share all this! One small question..

How do you keep organized in dealing with all this? Pages audit, tracking keywords/sites, improving articles, keeping notes, etc..

There are some techniques or tools you can recommend? Thank you.

Thank you; I wanted to ask the same question!

Especially since the part where he said he gives keywords different value using the content by placing them in the right place inside the article. That seems like a pain in the ass for a copywriter and if you add all the other factors, there must a method to keep tracking all of these, at least until you get used to.

PS : Thanks man for writing this topic and Merry Xmas to you and your family!

I have my site hooked up to Google analytics with webmaster tools authorized in it. I like to sort by impressions of pages and traffic on pages ... I take the weakest pages and I know they're screwed up somehow and fix them. Whatever has the least impressions obviously isn't ranking.

Also I know the pages ... if you've got 100 successful pages that rank well you get to know them pretty well ... I'm only dealing with one personal site at a time.

I also have custom scripts I made to check keywords which helps ... I may release that someday as well.

I deleted my tags but Google still doesn't remove them when i do a search "site:domain.com". They're still there, but direct me to a 404 page since they do not exist. Do I have to manually remove them from Google's index? My sitemap consists only of my pages/posts/images.

What a GREAT informative read PHP!!!!
Thanks for your tips and guidance, coming at a perfect time as I am just setting up an authority site.
I have a question about setting up social accounts, gravatars and the like. I understand their role and importance but what about IP addys and the such?
Should we be using proxies to setup each account? Let's say I want 5-8 accounts with different people, how do I go about setting them all up with proxies or without?
My concern is big G putting the pieces together and seeing all 8 people commenting on my sites with the same IP addresses if I don't use a proxy, but then again, not everyone has an extra 8 proxies to use.

Does this all matter, or can I just go ahead and start making accounts without worrying about this?

Thanks to PHP and others who help in this thread!!

absolutely epic.....some dude close to Kern is pitching a 5k product essentially containing just this thread.

hey php, thank you for this great thread. I try to rank for a 3 term keyword, if i search my full title it ranks 3 and 53 for the desired keywords. I attach my density screenshot, is there anything to optimize? and btw my website is in german but many english-language sites are ranking higher for that 3 term keyword.

Thanks

Just came back to thank you PHPBuilt....... The problems you identified last time were the reason I was not getting on page 1... I have now started doing proper keyword research + better on page SEO... one more thing I found that I have to add my main keyword in title and content too....

Thanks man.. You have given me a new direction:)

I have a question about kw density:
How do I count the kw density percentage? Let's say I have a kw that consist of 4 words. My whole site content is 500 words. The kw is in the title, desc, url and H1 (4 times all together). So, 1% would be then 500*0.01 = 5 words. Now as I have the kw 4 times and it consists of 4 words it would be 4*4=16 words. Will the kw density be 3.2% OR do I have to count every kw as a separate term and calculate it as 4 words out of 500 so the kw desnity would be 0.8%. Which one is correct?

Second question:
When calculating the kw density, how do we calculate the content length? Will it be from the source code (including the html tags, css etc) OR do we calculate the content length by adding together all the words from the page, title, url, alt tags, decription etc.

Thank you!
