PHPBUILT's Idiot-Proof Guide to Authority Site Building

hey php, thank you for this great thread. I try to rank for a 3 term keyword, if i search my full title it ranks 3 and 53 for the desired keywords. I attach my density screenshot, is there anything to optimize? and btw my website is in german but many english-language sites are ranking higher for that 3 term keyword.

Thanks

Looks good. .4% is pretty low for body, you could probably do with another keyword use in body.

I have a question about kw density:
How do I count the kw density percentage? Let's say I have a kw that consist of 4 words. My whole site content is 500 words. The kw is in the title, desc, url and H1 (4 times all together). So, 1% would be then 500*0.01 = 5 words. Now as I have the kw 4 times and it consists of 4 words it would be 4*4=16 words. Will the kw density be 3.2% OR do I have to count every kw as a separate term and calculate it as 4 words out of 500 so the kw desnity would be 0.8%. Which one is correct?

Download quirk searchstatus plugin for firefox. Highlight a keyword(s), right click and select "keyword density". It'll tell you exactly what it is without you having to do the math.

Second question:
When calculating the kw density, how do we calculate the content length? Will it be from the source code (including the html tags, css etc) OR do we calculate the content length by adding together all the words from the page, title, url, alt tags, decription etc.

Thank you!

Again just let quirk searchstatus do it.

What a GREAT informative read PHP!!!!
Thanks for your tips and guidance, coming at a perfect time as I am just setting up an authority site.
I have a question about setting up social accounts, gravatars and the like. I understand their role and importance but what about IP addys and the such?
Should we be using proxies to setup each account? Let's say I want 5-8 accounts with different people, how do I go about setting them all up with proxies or without?
My concern is big G putting the pieces together and seeing all 8 people commenting on my sites with the same IP addresses if I don't use a proxy, but then again, not everyone has an extra 8 proxies to use.

Does this all matter, or can I just go ahead and start making accounts without worrying about this?

Thanks to PHP and others who help in this thread!!

Wylie

I was able to start 79 Google+ accounts from the same IP address. True, I needed a bunch of sim cards to do it ... but I was able to do it. Do what you can with 1 IP address and don't worry if you get banned. Getting banned is simply a learning process.

Man you are great, i did a test for a 2 term keyword where i had a low density of 0,4%

my ranking was 47 for that keyword i thought lets test it and ive added the keyword 2 times, and now 2 hours later my ranking is on (pos. 23) i never thought keyword density would make that much difference.

Thank you!

I deleted my tags but Google still doesn't remove them when i do a search "site:domain.com". They're still there, but direct me to a 404 page since they do not exist. Do I have to manually remove them from Google's index? My sitemap consists only of my pages/posts/images.

Tags will unfortunately show for quite some time. I took down tags off a test site that is about 10 articles with 90 tags ... had 100 pages indexed and the 90 are dropping at about 10 per week.

Yep, mentioned it before but Google is super fast on these changes. I say 48 hours but usually, for me, its fixed within 24 hours ... and if Google just so happened to have checked the page immediately after I posted a keyword density change, it can show the results in as little as an hour or two.

Thank you phphbuilt for such useful thread. I Have learned a lot from this :)

Two questions:

"#7) Remove duplicate navigational systems" I have my main categories on top navigational menu, but sub-categories only are visible as a drop down menu under the main categories. Do they still pass the juice from home page, or should I add ALL my categories in to a sidebar? My category pages are no-indexed, but navigational system links are do-follow.

"#6) Don't use breadcrumbs."
What do you mean by saying "If your navigation system probably already has the same links" ? My WP theme doesn't show breadcrumbs by default. As I said above, the only navigational system I have are main categories in top navigation menu and subcategories as a drop down. In this case should I use a plugin to have breadcrumbs on my site for better interlinking, or it is better avoid it?

Thank you one more time for invaluable information.

Starting next year, Im putting all this info into action.
Thanks again for this amazing guide brother!

Since i have been utilizing the information in this thread on my magento store, my once penalized websites are back!! I check rankings everyday and as of today ALL of my keywords are ranking again from the dead. Once I really started looking at what was indexed by google, I was surprised at the amount of duplicate content I found. My home page alone was indexed 5 different ways..

I have noindexed everything on the store except for the home page, then integrated wordpress with magento. I've followed all these instructions found in this thread on wordpress to create all this fresh, properly written content, and to showcase my products more effectively. All of my store is still in the index atm even though I noindexed it all, and there is still some "content cannibalization" happening with the old content vs the new, but I figure once I start building links, google will crawl it all the way again and my serps will skyrocket even farther once all that dead weight is deindexed (I hope).

php, i'm going to send you a tip once the orders start coming in from google again. Shouldnt be much longer at this rate.

Congrats! That's exactly what you do with an estore that doesn't rank from duplicate low quality content ... you just noindex it and blog about the products. I'm sure you'll have good success with it -- this is mainly what I do on my personal sites and it is a winner.

Your menu system is fine. That "drop down" is probably handled with css and Google just sees the real links. I would recommend that you do exactly what you're doing on a website that is 100 pages or less ... with categories fewer than say 10. If you're going more categories and a lot of pages on your site, you would benefit from siloing concepts. That would include cutting down on the site-wide links and only doing the sub links when you're viewing that particular category.

If that doesn't make sense, google "seo siloing" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

No ... breadcrumbs are bad. If your template doesn't have it by default then that saves you the trouble of ripping it out.

I am just fixing a website that used to rank not too bad, had some pagse bringing 3-5$ a day, then disappear from the chart, I found that each page had 4 links to the home page, 3 with the exact keyword that is also the name and the domain of the site, redwidget.com, name red widget, and one link in the footer was redwidget.com link, so I removed all this linking, except one in the sidebar, if people want to go back to the home page, so they were 120 links from internal pages, all pointing to the home page, plus I removed the name of the website red widgets from the title.

Lets see, what will bring, I did less than 12 hours ago, I see some moves but I am not sure, will wait and see other 24-48 hours.
Plus most of the pages have still high keyword density, will write another paragraph each and add after I have an idea if the first fix worked. and see if I can improve more.

Thinks how much money we lost, not doing this small fine tuning, I had a page ranking for a keyword, that used to move between 5 and 11,before disappearing for some google update, when was in 5th position use to bring 10$, when went on 2 page 1$ or almost nothing, may be ranked for others keyword too. Anyway think if that same page would be stable in 1st or 2nd, or even always in 5th. On a 30 day period is good money, in a year is a lot, fix in 5th would bring about 3.500$ a year from a page monetized with Adsense, not bad, may be took me 1 or 2 hour to write that article.

I feel stupid to dont have looked into this stuff that phpbuilt show us.

Thank you, it's clear now.

Should I have a backlink to my home page below each post (for better interlinking)? I already have a do-follow "Home'' link on top navigation and no-follow "website.com" link in my footer.

When you're dealing with wordpress, on 99% of templates available out there, there is a link to homepage in a H1 tag that points back to the homepage with whatever the site name is. There is also the "home" in navigation. There is also usually a footer link to the homepage.

Get rid of the footer. Make sure the name of the blog isn't an exact keyword unless you don't mind the homepage being penalized for that keyword (or else rip the H1 tag out that has the homepage link). That link is sometimes a graphic with an alt tag of the name of the blog.

There's also the homepage link in the breadcrumb ... rip that out if you can.

You only need 1 template-injected link to your homepage, thats all. The "Home" that is in most menu systems is perfect, because its not keyword stuffed (doubt you're trying to rank for "Home"). Everything else should go.

@PHP

Here is an issue I have atm:

I started a new site a few weeks ago and have been following your advice. I had 8 posts indexed in google but yesterday I checked again and only see my home page indexed? I am assuming they will come back at some point but just wondered if you had any insight on this?

Hmm.

Well, maybe its a good idea to get at least a couple backlinks ... start a wordpress blog and a blogger blog and do backlinks to your homepage. If you make a sites.google.com page they typically scan that immediately and credit your site with the link.

That little extra juice will give Google incentive to scan your site more often.

Thank you for answering my question before. I do have a new question though:
When you said that I should check the kw density by using the FF plugin and kw percentage under "body" then the "body" tab doesn't count the times the kw is in the title, url or description on the site. Don't these fluctuate the kw density of the page?

Second question:
If I want to rank for kw "gray love potion" then I need to have it around 1% but do I need to cut down the "gray love" and "love potion" to also 1,5% and then the individual words to 2% when I don't want to rank for them. I ONLY want to rank for the "gray love potion" Thanks!

Third question:
If I want to rank for two keywords on the same page, one is: "love potion awesome" and the second is "love potion uncool" then will it hurt me if I put both of the keywords in the title and description of the page?

Fourth question:
Let's say I have 20 sites that all have the exact same page (how-to quide for completing an offer). Because the page has always the same content, will it hurt my overall site ranking or will the page just not rank but doesn't affect my sites rankings.

That's a lot of questions but I hope you can answer them, thanks!

Defiantly bookmarked for the next build! :) I've been aware of the problem with wordpress duplicate content for some time now, but I have been unsure how to clean it all up, thanks for clarifying things and putting it into a nice little package. Great Share!

Hi phpbuilt,

I have been tinkering with my posts, some keywords I cannot get to rank under 1% density and when I bring them over 1.5% to 2% they seem to rank. So I am thinking with these posts I will use slightly less exact match anchor backlinks than other keywords that would be under 1% density. Is that an OK strategy? Most of these posts will in the low competition range so hoping they won't need a lot of backlinks anyway. I understand the whole balancing act as you say(if your onpage targeted keywords are high in density then your off page has to have less exact match to balance that and vice versa). Or should I keep tinkering to see if i can get all my keywords to have under 1% density.

Also for each post what way do think it is best to write titles? Say the keyword is "Christmas train sets" Do you only think about SEO when writing the title and write like "Christmas train sets" even though it may be not be that appealing to the reader. Or do you tone down the SEO an try to give the reader something more appealing like "For the latest and greatest in Christmas train sets"

Hi phpbuilt,

Personally I'd prefer ranking at #20 with a 1% keyword density than #10 with a 1.5% keyword density. Why? When it comes time to backlink your 1.5% density article won't accept exact anchors very well, whereas a 1% article will. Your #10 position will get penalized wheras the #20 position will be a contender for top 5 with backlinks. Thats the way it seems to work out from my observation.
