I've been using haste hosting for a couple of months now.

When I switched from just host I was very impressed. I suddenly had a much faster website, for a lot less money.

Sorry for being technologically challenged as usual Jake, but is the main benefit of VPS hosting that I can run my websites and install software directly onto the server?
Would there be any other benefit of getting VPS hosting?

Hey and no worries,
Their is generally alot more benefits then shared hosting. Just to name a few.... You have more free reign to do what you want on the server, which grants you SSH access. Another huge benefit is that you arent sharing resources with alot of people so this generally creates a more stable environment for you and your websites. The downside to this however is that the VPS's are unmanaged unless you know what you are doing in linux. You can always pay to have it managed

It is NOT commerical writing, raid 10 configurations offer a very fast, redundant, i/o so generally if a website hosting company is offering just a 10GB vs someone with a 10GB Raid10 you will see faster website performance on that raid 10. A Raid 10 also means that if a hard drive fails that your sites wont be down, and if more than two fails your data is still safe. I hope this answers your questions
