The country: The name of the country literally means ?Republic of The Savior". It is the smallest republic and does not have a single Caribbean coastline but the most densely populated place in Central America. Climate: The climate is described as tropical but it is rainy season from May to October. Most months are considered summer. The best time to visit El Salvador would be at the beginning or end of the dry season.
People: Salvadorans are known as ?guanacos?. Sixty-four percent of the population lives in urban areas. The latest census shows a population of more than 7 million consisting of mestizos from European and indigenous American descent. Majority of the people speaks the national language that is Spanish but Nahuatl is still spoken in some regions. The Salvadorans are extremely friendly and warm people known for being hospitable. The national dish is the famous pupusa that dates from pre-Columbian times.
No population of African-descent: El Salvador is the only country in Central America that has no visible population of African descent. This is due to laws established during colonial and modern times that do not allow people of African descent to enter the country. During pre-Columbian times, Mayas and Lencas with other indigenous groups used to inhabit El Salvador but they were later conquered by the Spaniards.
Economy: Due to natural calamities like earthquakes and hurricane, the economy is slow. With poor government policies, corruption is strong. Nineteen percent of the population lives with less than $1.25 per day. Tourism is the fastest growing sector of economy.
Flora and Fauna: In the last decade, tropical forest and overall forest cover has expanded and the country is experiencing reforestation. The national bird is known as the torogoz. Four species of sea turtles make the coasts of El Salvador their home.
Parks: The country has declared five national parks: Cerro Verde, Conchagua, El Boqueron, El Imposible and Montecristo.
UNESCO World Heritage: Considered the ?Pompeii of the Americas? Joya de Ceren was a pre-Hispanic farming community that was buried in ashes by a volcanic eruption.
Sports: Due to its awesome beaches, El Salvador is the site of many International surfing competitions. It is common to see people with surfing boards at the international airport. The national soccer team has attended the FIFA World Cup twice. Salvadoran Magico Gonzales is considered as one of the best soccer players in history.
