How is this service for creating keyword targeted backlinks to an existing established for a few years whitehat site with just over 5000 current backlinks?

Or is it just useful for boom and bust or getting new sites indexed?

A little bit of both. With the whitehat site, you have to be careful (and only use posts not comments), and walk on eggshells a bit, but if you use nonspammy story bodies and titles, you should get some backlinks and also on the inital day of and a couple after posting get a spike in traffic.

It's really really useful for the boom and bust as well. All of it depends on how you apply your tactics.

As long as they aren't spammy, they usually work out fine. I can post up to around 2500 or so posts successfully most of the time, as long as it's not a banned word (viagra, cialis, pr0n, etc...)

Yes, it is automated in the sense that the posts aren't hand done, though you couldn't tell the difference, whether I was copy/pasting and hitting submit, or using an autosubmitter.
