A link pyramid is similar to a linkwheel in which external links are pointing to your site, but a pyramid structure is way better and stronger.

You have your main site at the top, then a second level in which are backlinks to your main site, then you have a third level where there are backlinks to the second level links. All links are pointing toward your site from level 3 to the top. Makes your site more spread out and better than going in a circle for a linkwheel.
