It works with any store. The main reason to succeed is products not the way you make your store.
Answering the questions:
1. Yes, it still works as at the beginning.
2. I don't believe in saturation but if you are in small niche you might get out of accounts where to advertise. That way you won't be able to scale. Long term? Sure, I am doing that already more than a year and still earning. Not sure what will happen with Instagram after 3-5 years. So can't guarantee this will work then. But works now and in the near future for sure.
3. No, 50k is actually a small amount. I know another guy who earned 450k in the first year with Instagram shoutouts.
