Penguin Rescue - A live case study!

How is it a penguinized website if the keywords fell around a Panda update?

Also, panda hit and penguin hit websites only recover on panda and penguin refreshes, not on any random date.

It was probably just an algorithmically penalized website.
Typo. Changed :) Site went down with Penguin, since most of the links were built on a single term, and mostly on blog networks.

Ah, but still, penguinized websites only recover during penguin refreshes. The last one was on October 5th. If it was penguinized, it wouldn't recover outside of a penguin(or panda, though that is just hearsay) refresh.

Hearsay seems to be right. Even SEM Rush shows a blank for 2 months, and its back now. Or probably we were lucky that there has been a quiet refresh that Google did ;)

Even if it's true, it still wouldn't explain your website being hit by penguin, since the last panda was on 27th september.

Sure sounds more like an EMD that's lost rankings due to the equalizer update Google did, then gained them back. Much more so than Penguin.

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but we've tried a number of extremely similar techniques and they did nothing to help a Penguin recovery. With Penguin, sites that lost 200+ places are facing a glass ceiling. Simple link building isn't going to get you over that hurdle.

If I'm wrong, then apologies in advance, but things just don't add up here.

Could be. We've noticed positive movement for another client's site using the exact same strategy. But then, you could be right too. Will keep monitoring and come back if I notice a difference.
