Is it better to have the blog posts appear on the homepage (maybe below the "dummy" content) since it usually has the most authority, or does it matter if there is just a link in say, the sidebar, that goes to the blog post?
Doesn't really matter. What's important that you keep your site's structure and navigation appear natural. Remove 'uncategorized' category from your pages if you have any.
