So I opened my 1st Shopify store , after working hours making it look as legit as I can, I finished last night and set up the payment method as PayPal (I intend to set up other gateways but those will take a while with all the paperwork). I wanted to test the checkout process so I had a couple of friends buy stuff, both their payments got denied (2 seperate card, from 2 seperate cities) 'we are unable to process your payment through PayPal please go back to the merchant and try a different payment method'.
So I called PayPal and according to them my account is fine and is eligible for both domestic and international payments. So I called Shopify and they couldnt resolve it either, asking me to call PayPal again.
I'm at my wits end here. I'm from India btw, both my friends are from India but I don't think location would have an effect on payments.
Any suggestions?

Inter-country payment within India are not allowed. Only Debit/Credit cards allowed for paying through PayPal. No use can use their received PayPal balance to purchase something else using PayPal. Payments are only allowed through cards.

Since you and your friends are from India this issue occured. But recently PayPal India opened doors for indian PayPal users to receive payments from indian buyers. For that you need to finish KYC, which you can see the details in your PayPal account settings.

Also if your store currency is in dollars and your friends tried to pay with local banks debit cards like union bank, IOB, etc, that also give you error. Tell them to pay with credit card or international debit cards from banks like ICICI, HDFC, etc. If they can able to pay from these debit cards, then no problem

They did you international credit cards, that have been used during travel abroad earlier so they most definitely work for international payments.

I have furnished the relevant KYC documents, when I go to my PayPal account I see the account being eligible for both international and national payments. Though I might have to ask PayPal if this is happening due to inter country issue.

It sounds to be an issue with the cards used.

Your Target Market is also India? If not you do not need to worry and with shopify for Paypal you don't even need to make test transactions..

No the target market is not in India, the market , provide I can get the damn shop working would be USA/Canada etc. I hope you are right , I'm freaking out.

They did use international credit cards not the local ones.

Thanks everyone for replying.
If anyone can think of anything else please do let me know.

I heard from few people this month, that they are facing lots of problems in PayPal. Even they can't transfer their PayPal balance to other PayPal and also to their bank account. So maybe their is a PayPal server issues. Tell them to try multiple times with different price

What country is your paypal in?
I recently transffwred successfully to my bank account

Have you tried other paypal acc?

Hey,

Go to Resolution centre on PayPal. It'll say "Your account is limited". You'll have to upload documents and get your KYC done.

Your friends need to do it too, if they want to send to an Indian PayPal.

Ask your friends to send you $1 to your PayPal directly and you'll see that they can't

If you need to test, pay someone here who's not in India $1 + fee and make a $1 product on your store and ask them to check out.
