    OK,

So I've been dealing with a few "traders" when buying backlink programs, and yet I see everyone using gmail email addresses, and furthermore this guy using a gmail form:

    https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/f...an-a-fiverr-gig-read-our-huge-reviews.532791/

For a programmer in Google, it would be so easy to develop their algorithm to hunt down PBNs, backlink purchases just by simply looking through their email boxes (by the way, you opted in for this - they cover their back as they're "scanning your emails for viruses" as well as targeted advertising of course.

But come on people, we're trying to rank #1 by faking signals to a company, but at the same time using their own products for communication is just stupid...

Privacy laws. They can only use anonymized data for very specific purposes. Same reason why they can't start reading all your Android messages.

It's the law.. which they are very inclined to to follow.

Maybe the Govt monitor them, but not Google to stop people making a few bucks from their search engine.

Gmail is but a drop in the ocean when it comes to hunting the manipulators of rankings.

But yeah gmail should probably be avoided for such things

I'm inclined to think you're being paranoid.
There are conservatively 200 billion emails sent daily, and with 15% Gmail market share that's 30 billion emails.
What you say that it would be easy for a programmer to hunt down blackhat activity would be true with a much smaller data set, but I highly doubt it's even worth the resources on this scale. And that's not even considering the fact that it's probably not worth it legally or for their reputation.

You said you are a developer but your idea is funny, a big company is not a joke. They have company rules for employees and they follow the company guide, if there is any activities to spy customers like that Sergey Brin and Lary Page will be in jail for life time.
Yes, Google does read your email and collect information to provide to FBI,NSA,CIA to prevent terrorism. All companies do it!
Google is too rich, they busy working on money streams in the future like Artifacts Intelligence, Self driving car,Cloud services, Machine Learning... In fact, they said the revenue from Advertising won't be their main stream revenue in the future! Do you really think they care about these super small black hat guys, they just write the algorithm to wipe these guys out, they don't put their time and effort to care about it.

I also want to talk about your point is Google write a Machine learning algorithm to hunt you down. I am not a Machine Learning expert, so let assume that they will create a bag of words which are frequently used by Black hat guys. So what's the definition of a Black Hat guy? How does Google judge a guy is a Black Hat guy? I don't think it's the same as these spammers trying to create Gmail,Youtube accounts.
From my experience, the idea of detect something is Black Hat guy from their email will make the prediction accuracy very low because anyone could use these black hat keywords. You need more information and you need to defined what is a Black hat guy first. Machine Learning is use to predict things in a big data, it's not for spying a guy.
I believed you have learn Machine Learning in Udacity and you talking about Enron Email Dataset. But this case is so different.

Google is very very smart, but people overestimate how nuanced the algorithm is. I love it when someone makes wild statements about how important social media links are to SEO.

Google does scan through emails, but this is for ad purposes. I doubt they are legally able to take that data and apply it on a 1 to 1 basis to go after link sales. Instead they probably rely on large scale cases and rely heavily on whistleblowers who email in.

I'm waiting for the day Matt Cutts pulls the curtain open on what really happens behind the scenes.

Sure, this already scan for viruses and targeted advertising. But scanning to save their own search engine will be on a completely different legal level.

Just because I started looking at SEO doesn't mean I don't know about other aspects of digital life. I can program / develop Linux servers from bare metal, I run an online Internet radio advertising publishing network, I can write commercial software for .NET. In fact, I have a degree in Computer Studies and a masters in Accounting.

I think my original post was a valid question, clearly it seems that Google cannot use their proprietary software / tools for internal usage, such as detecting PBN developments and other black hat processes being conducted.

Perhaps this original discussion got a little heated last night, but I still believe it was a valid question. It just "doesn't feel right" when you're using a company's own tools to carry out business manipulating it's own software processes. And well, as someone mentioned above, Google are damn smart. The types of emails and business processes I see being conducted on Google's products are pretty damn clear. For example, I had to use a Google form to note down my URLs and key words for a backlinking package to prop up a PBN site. Another vendor for another backlinking package insisted that I emailed my hand written articles for his use - to his gmail address.

Reviewing the above, I might take the time to get this record straight. Without any doubt, Google have certain powers to review the content of an email (viruses, terrorist activity), but at the same time I'm also reading above that legally they cannot use such data to make assertions of PBN existence or other black hat activities.

But regardless of these questions, why can't people just use emails hosted on their own servers, or other alternatives such as mail.com?

I might drop an email over to Google customer support sometime to actually get to the bottom of this.
