Overoptimized internal links = reduced keyword rankings?

Hi guys!

I hope i am in the right forum section!

Like the title of the thread is saying, i have problems with reduced keyword rankings of one of my websites.

I have a website, which was ranking for a very competitve money keyword 1 at position 5 and another money keyword 2 at position 2 in google (two subpages: keyword 1 for subpage 1 and keyword 2 for subpage 2).

What have i done in the last two weeks:

Writing four articles, where i have built internal links (with money and general keywords) to the subpage with keyword 1 and to the other subpage with keyword 2. That was everything, only internal linking, no external link building to these two subpages.

Today i saw, that keyword 1 dropped to position 10 and keyword 2 dropped to 5. All my other keywords of different subpages of this website did not drop.

Now i have some questions, that i can not answer myself. Maybe you can help me out with this please.

Is it possible, that keywords are dropping, because of the internal link building from three new subpages? In my opinion this could be right for this case.

Did it happen to you, that you build links internally and then your keyword rankings dropped too, but recovered at the end?

What would you do in my case? I think the dropping comes from the internal links. I have no other explanations for it.

Would you wait to see, if it is google dance and maybe the keywords will recover or will even rise at the end? If yes, how long would you wait?

Would you remove the last built internal links? Could this be a sign to google, that i am overoptimizing?

Would you build new brand links and diversity links to the pages with the competitve dropped keywords (without deleting the internal links)?

I really do not know what i should do right now.

Interesting questions, me too I was wondering if internal links optimizations (above all exact match anchor) can influence the total % of exact match anchors. I will bookmark this thread

But in short, you can over-optimize due to internal links.

Your ranking drop is probably just google dance. So just wait until your rankings stabilize, a week should do it. And then go from there, if you're already ranking pretty high up then just throw some links at the page and it should rank higher as you're already on page 1.

This would explain what I am seeing. I recently shot a bunch of high quality links at a money keyword for an internal page. I have been going up im up to #3 but half of my other keyword actually dropped. Their all related, in the same niche so my best guess is I overoptimized too fast and google has an algorithm for that?

I don't have anything to sale assholes. I was just going to offer some valuable advice and I'm not here for you to accuse of trying to hide anything because I value everyone's advice on here. It's just that I did know a little about this topic. I don't care if you want it or not but the ones who do I will PM back when I can.

I can confirm that over-optimisation of internal links does indeed effect rankings negatively.

Surprisingly it's not that commonly discussed considering how negative an effect it can have. I exact matched all of my sub pages to my homepage in an attempt to rank for a keyword, my thoughts being, 'if the link juice is flowing around my website, I'll try make it contextual'. Well within a week I was booted to page 6 in what seemed extremely similar to an algorithmic penguin penalty in behavior, no other changes in backlinks etc were made during this time, so I can safely rule out any other factors.

So I undid all of my internal anchor changes and made them either LSI or generic and sure enough within 10 days my website was back on the first page. I really didn't expect the recovery to be that quick but there you go!
