Overnight Drop in Rankings

I got hit to I am afraid. Looks like it only a matter of time before I receive the manual web spam notification LOL. I spent hundred of dollars on site, but I guess that is the risk you take with ranking. I will take the opportunity to learn from this, and luckily I have other projects going. I think I am going to lay off the sape links for now, not sure how far this algo penalty is going.

My site is being smashed like a football too. It was just about to come on P1 (just 2 weeks before that it was dancing crazy like 50+ and 100+ sometimes, 4-5 months old btw) and it got pitched back to page 5-7 again a week ago.

Your post gives me some hope.

Just to make sure I understand correctly, your site was #1-3 before getting thrown and again came back to same spots? How old is it?

Did you take any specific measures to restore your rank, or did you just proceed like normal and things corrected on their own eventually?

There are 2 types of different "smacks"

1st where your keywords are not dropped, but literally nowhere to be seen - can't be found.
2nd dropped by a few pages.


My case was the first one, on 3 of my websites, all of them now are back on the old positions/ increased positions. I've stopped building money anchors links and build more diversified/url anchor links than usual. Anchor text ratio were below 15%~ on all of those sites at all times.

On the 2nd case which some people are experiencing, it's a more serious one, haven't seen a site going above page 2 after this happens, but time will tell. Judging from my research it's because of lack of anchor diversification, and overall unnatural link building, lots of money anchors in small time frames, etc. Obvious stuff.

More than likely manual penalty, Google has rolled out a ton of penalties lately.

At times the penalty notice will follow ranking drops, other times it is the other way around.
