overclocking question

I am running ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64 bit with a amd 830 cpu. How can I overclock it past 2.8GHZ?

Depending on the motherboard you have that feature is accessible in your system bios. Doesn't matter what OS you are using.

On a second note, I wouldn't recommend you overclock an amd. I used to have 3k series processor and it died due to overheating problems.

Get an intel...anything in the 'e' series range...and you wouldn't be disappointed by its performance.

Right now I'm using the fan of a cpu that can do 3.4GHZ instead of the one that came with my computer.So i dont think I will have a problem going to 3.0GHZ.

Is the new i7 extreme a good one to get?
 
If you over clock, make sure you have a VERY good cooling setup.
If not, your processor WILL MELT. Overclocking is NOT meant to keep it over clocked for days or weeks on end.

I've been building computers / fixing them / working on them(hardware and software) for over 10 years. I'm no expert, but I know my way around.

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHZ I have it overclocked to 4.2 and it works flawlessly. I have the corsair liquid cool H70 though and it helps a TON. Its cheap and works awesome.

 
I think i should probably just wait until my next build to get into overclocking. The new 8 core cpu from AMD looks nice.
 
u usually need a good MB to be able to overclock with stability.

Agreed. Also, it's not just your CPU fan you have to worry about. I had a computer overclocked for over a year. Finally my RAM died. It had a lifetime warranty, so replacement was free, but still, I had to figure out the problem. The computer kept crashing. I ran a memtest and it failed, so I opened my computer up, and the RAM was so hot I couldn't even touch it. Be careful with overclocking too much. (10% or less is the rule I've heard, and even then, you may very well shorten the lifespan if your hardware.)

I've often wondered if it's even worth it for the power consumption and hardware you'd have to buy to be able to mine them! Has anyone done calculations on this?
