I think it's best just to do some onsite work while the dust settles.. Remove any unnecessary over optimizing on your site, add good quality unique articles gradually, don't add 10 1 day and forget it, add a couple every few days, add some other unique content aswell. From what i've seen google is getting better and picking up garbage plr and badly spun unreadable content, go get some real articles written and make sense when read by an English speaking native. Go create a facebook page, add some content on that, get some likes, do the same for google+ and twitter. Try and add some call to action on the sites too if you can.
I still think content is king, even more so now to balance out the amount of spam links going to your site. But if its rubbish content then it don't count.
I had a site go from a solid position 1 to page 8 from BMR etc, I've been working on fixing content and adding high quality articles, basically making the site worthwhile, I've added testimonials, a form, address, then more unique content (i wrote some of it myself) + edited meta.
While i've been doing that, I got a small amount of edu's, did some press releases using my keyword directly b4 the url, submitted to some whois, did some high quality social bookmarks, submitted to about 50+ directories, adding fb page with link from my site and now getting gradual bookmarks everyday. Im also adding some web 2.0's and wikis, but gradually. I think doing blasts with thousands of links in a few hours/days is also going to have a negative affect.
My main keyword is climbing up page 2 now, even through this latest Googlespew and my second keyword just hit the bottom of page 1, still climbing.
In saying that, I have about 30 other sites that have been hit hard, so my article guys are going to have allot to work to do now
It isn't easy to fix all your sites but I don't see another way out. Even if google tames the latest update certain parts of it will stick.
