Hello everyone.
I want to open e-commerce shop using wordpress and woocomerce. But when I checked wordpress, it says I need to pay for it. is that mandatory for having an e-commerce shop online using wordpress?
Thanks.

WordPress and woo are free, you are looking at WordPress. Com, go to WordPress. Org it's free

What do you mean when you say check with wordpress. Did you have a chat with their support?
The things that you have to pay for the woocommerce is usually the hosting, domain name and optionally the woocommerce theme.
Cheap $5/month vps/hosting + $10/year domain name for a starter.
Cheaper than $30/month shopify, not to mention expandable with all plugins and addons.

Oh, I went into wordpress . com and then it devided into .com and .org, saying I need to pay for a host.

So you're saying all free?
Thank you very much! :)

It is free, provided you have your own domain and hosting. Those things cost money.

You can hire a freelancer to set it up for you for under $10. It's that easy. There's many tutorials & video's on how to do every step.
So I do need to pay for hosting? and for someone to set the Woo Commerce up?

Yes, you need to pay for hosting. There are free hosting providers out there but I do not recommend wasting your time with them if you are serious about your business.
Woocomerce is free to download, install, and set up. But time is money...so hiring someone to do it for you will cost. That's only if you're struggling to set it up yourself. Doing anything yourself is free! Good luck.

People normally opt for sites like shopify due to the simplicity behind it, the price may seem steep but if your building a business its peanuts really.... If your going to create your own site and use woocommerce just take 2 things into account:

1. It's going to require a lot of time and effort to get used to. Correct templates and setting everything up.
2. Is it a safe platform to deal with, it's free after all is there any exploitable parts so "certain" people can get free goods? Im pretty sure it's safe but it's best to check these things first.

I understood.
Do you think it won't be safe enough? if it's not, then you think shopify would be a good solution? I mean, it feels a bit like another ebay/amazon platform to me

Cheapest way is beg somebody to let you host your site on their server for free. Next would probably start searching for hosting providers and coupon codes. Make a list of features and pricetags and pick who you deem worthy of your money.

I rent a vps on OVH. It's cheap and does the job.

As for shopify vs woocommerce, there's a ton of topics on this on the internet you can research.

Test both and see which better suits you because what works for me may not work for thee.

It should be safe tons of people use it your problem is setting it all up. Using a template suited to woocommerce is what you need they offer storefront for free. They say it's free.... but like many things they have "premium" versions i.e special templates probbaly other extras. I have not used them before but have ran my own self hosted e commerce site in the past. Just make sure it all works last thing you want is for sales to fail or "cock up". I really cant remember who i used to deal with transactions it was a few years back now.

Thank you dami3n! I will think about opening a store of my own.
Meanwhile I'm trying to dropship on ebay, not doing so well.

Don't bother with that unless the companies you work with can really deliver. I have done it with auto car parts tools and all kinds. It's a race to the bottom. Good luck with your business plan. Just remember that ranking your site and advertising is key.

wordpress is free, you can get perfectly good ecommerce themes on there for free. Woocommerce is easy to install and set up, nowadays it has a wizard that walks you through it ( it didn't when i fist started with it years ago ) . Plenty of hosts on here that can do it cheaply.
Just go to wordpress.org, it's open source and will always be free.
