If I do all the steps required in proper on page SEO, can I beat the off page SEO done from my competitors ? Or are they completely unrelated ?

The positioning depends on many factors and is a right mix of onpage and offpage seo. It all depends on the competition and the chosen market. Furthermore, it must be taken into account that the google algorithm is constantly evolving and what works today may not be valid tomorrow.

Something on the lines of future proof strategy ?

Only google knows the answer to your question .... lol ... I would focus on quality content that involves users and if you want to sleep peacefully I would leave out black hat techniques

On-page won't be enough you will need to generate links eventually

No matter how much on-page SEO you do, you can never beat off-page SEO of your competitors. According to Google's logic, good on-page and great content should earn you legit backlinks to your site.

You won't necessarily beat an off-site strategy. Many people have claimed this, but this is utterly false in 99% of the cases.
Many factors like CTR and visits may help ranking a lot, which are off-site (apart from links) and some "gurus" have not taken into account.

For the sake of convenience, it's better not to mix them
Treat them as if they're two different factors

For a couple of weak links, it could work,
but, you'll have no chance with pages/websites with a good link profile,
if you don't have the budget to invest for tough keywords, just go for the easier ones,
when you get some profit from these, you can reinvest which would be even easier by this point as your website have some authority from the ranking pages & visitors

If you need to beat competitors, Then on-page SEO is not enough, You need to do off-page SEO techniques.
Yes, that is why it is so costly to rank as you need links or offpage seo to rank.

On Page SEO: On-page SEO is a technique that is used for optimizing individual web pages in order to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic in search engines. ...
Off page Seo includes link building, increasing link popularity, search engine, link exchange etc. In on page seo we will analyze complete website.

Here's the thing.

Off-page is becoming less and less important, and on-page signals are becoming more and more important.

Does that mean on-page alone can beat off-page? No, at least not right now.

Think of backlinks as a tie breaker. If there are two pages with equal on-page SEO signals, the one with stronger backlinks will win. Even if one page is slightly weaker on-page signals, it can make up for it by burying the other page with backlinks.

HOWEVER

CTR will beat all. User engagement will beat out on-page and off-page every time. If one page is getting the majority of clicks compared to the competition, Google will rank it higher every time. That's one of the reasons why its so easy to get to spot 4 or 5 on most SERPs, but so hard to get #1 or #2, or why we see "weak" pages ranking #1 or #2. Those spots are highly influenced by user engagement signals.

In my opinion, you need to maintain a proper balance between the two. You cannot just optimize your on-page and leave out off-page. You will have to proportionally divide your time for the activities as both are equally important. Moreover, If you want to beat competitors, on-page SEO is not enough, You need to do off-page SEO techniques.

Finally someone with a sensible answer. Backlinks don't carry the same weight anymore, however, they are still a major part of any SEO strategy. On-page + lots of content on the SAME topic (topical relevancy), and site age will increase your chances. Make sure to interlink properly, and cater to the search intent of the user. If you do have some money, I would suggest building good links to your home page and linking out to your money pages from there.

They don’t compete, they complement each other. That said, having a perfect on-SEO will not beat your competitors if they have good links and you don’t.

Sometime it is possible, if you have not much competitor. But Occurs rarely.
Generally, Off page seo plays a major role and also necessary for your site to rank higher for a long run.

look at your sig.

Having pristine on page can take you very far. Add some links to that and you’re well on your way
