If you're just starting out, my best advice to you is to focus on building the right type of website.
The right type of website doesn't waste time focusing on keywords that are very competitive.
You're wasting a lot of time if you're focusing on a keyword that is saturated and dominated by long-established sites.
It's just not going to happen.
Either you'll be prepared to wait several years to even get a shot at ranking #1.
Or, be prepared to spend a lot of money on backlinks.
The better approach is to reverse engineer your competitors and find out which keywords their websites rank for that are not that competitive.
Usually, tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush have a keyword difficulty indicator.
Use that as a guide.
Also, pay close attention to their estimates of the traffic or search volume those keywords get on a monthly basis.
Using these two pieces of information, you can start to craft together a website that targets lower competition keywords and start producing useful content.
And this usually involves questions so if you have a target keyword, find as many different questions people ask about that keyword and compile the answers in a very long post.
This is how you get a leg up on the competition.
Is it easy?
Of course not!
Is it quick?
Are you kidding me?
But it's definitely going to be a much faster journey than if you attack your competitors head-on, targeting their toughest keywords.
