their english support is a bit engrish at times but if you just state what your having problems with or whatever clearly they are quite good, you get faster responses during moscow working hours but im not complaining about the response time in general though, they are pretty good at what they do, iv yet to have a serious ddos targetted at them as yet though but i doubt they would have any problems dealing with it in general with some of the plans they offer on the site
bsd - not from them but i have in general, if your used to linux it will do your head in, i learnt bsd before i learnt linux and recently started admining a bsd box again... arghhh nightmare, bsd itself is great, its just getting used to it if you arent
if you have a panel (i would recommend it, any other way if you dont know servers well will send you insane) then its just the usual add a domain, upload wordpress, whatever, nothing special to do that
performance of vmware vs the alternative, no clue, doubt it would be anything noticable, you would get more extra performance by getting lucky and getting on a vm with less load than usual due to some very idle vm's than you would picking a different vm over the other
no thats just because they use a self signed ssl certificate, they want you to install it in your browser then you dont get the message, its ssl for their admin panel, thats the main thing, if they have a real ssl cert or not is of little concern for the most part to us
ya, they do unmanaged, meaning you need to take care of the box urself or have someone do it for ya, i think they offer a management service for an extra fee? i forget, i do all my own management with all my boxen so i dont really care personally
yup those pings are about right, au sucks in general to anywhere in the world, ppc1 shouldv made a better difference but they really havnt put it to as much use as it should yet and au really needs a link directly to eu somewhere (does it have 1 already? dont think it does), speed of light really isnt enough haha
pretty much at the end of the day with hosting its all relative and these guys have been in the hosting biz for a long time and dont look like they are going anywhere anytime soon and have taken good care of me and iv been with them for over 12months and normally ill work out if a dc is worth dealing with in the first week or 2 when i do initial server setup stuff as i tend to break things at first until i get it 'just right' and they have helped me out every step of the way when i have had issues and are willing to do things like internal gige networks for connecting multiple servers together (web server + db server setup for vbulletin or things like that) so they will do weird setups when you require it as well
for a russian dc that will take moreso questionable content its hard to argue with them with what they offer and the price for the service they provide is quite good
