Never under value your service and expertise. You know how to do something that they don't. You're a specialist and should be compensated as such.
Don't be so hard pressed to get the sale to the point where you rip yourself off. Higher prices reflect your knowledge, skills, and worth.
There should only ever be two reasons why you severely reduce your fees:
1) The business owner can do the exact same job you can themselves and just doesn't have the time to do it themselves (this would rarely, if ever, happen... and even if it did, I still wouldn't severely discount my fees)
2) The client you are targeting has a very large circle of influence that could lead to more business. This is not the same as providing a deep discount because "you never know when they will call you with a larger job." Far from it! What a waste of your valuable time & knowledge.
The money you spend (in the form of a discount) must return far more money to you to be worth the discount. The best way to make that happen is to only give deep discounts to people who can refer a lot of business your way!
The less you charge, the harder you must work to make the same amount of money as someone who charges more! You also hurt the reputation of our industry by planting the idea in their head that our knowledge isn't specialized. Your ridiculously low ball prices scream this to your client without you having to say it yourself!
Remember! They don't know how to do what you do and/or don't have the means to do it themselves. Reason #2 is the only reason (in reality) that should ever lead you to give drastic discounts.
