So far so good. £300 received by Paypal with no issues.
I'm doing my own link building, but as far as I can see there are no other link building activities. The link was on the root page

I got seriously fucked over selling bitcoins - guy bought 4 bitcoins from me (over 2k at the time) sends friends and family, says his account was accessed by someone - i lost. Had evidence it was the same guy as he was name verified on localbitcoins. That left a bitter taste in my mouth - I hope Elon Musk fucks off to Mars and his spaceship runs out of power half way there.

Yeah, I want to know about this metrics as well. You might get another buyer who's willing to fork out $300 for that backlink.

I don't get it, if he charges back, you remove the link, who loses out? Plus chargebacks via paypal are ineffective for services.
I once got 150€ for a Post. Got blasted with some UR0 T1 Post.... Nothing terrible.
Will delete their link if they dont pay for the next 12 month,s )

Sounds fishy, proceed with caution but go for it. You can always remove the link later, as many have suggested.
What does his site look like? Is it 'toxic' or spammy in any way? Will you lose credibility with your own visitors?
Is this from your money site? If it is a PBN link or linked to a blog network, I don't think it's worth risking the security of that network.

300 pounds, dollars, euros, isn't an unusual rate when agencies are buying links for customers. If the site ranks itself, seems to have real visitors, the topic fits the customers site and the site owner even creates the content, that's not really expensive. Monthly SEO budgets in the medium $XXXX range aren't unusual and since quality beats quantity and you can't sell these clients PBNs or similar, 300 for a nice links is totally fine. Welcome to the whitehat (well, not really, but as clean as possible) world of SEO

Talking to some associates, it's quite common in my niche for people to reach out and pay for links. One of my associates sold a backlink for £800 I've been told.
It's a rather profitable niche when you get the traffic comes in, so there's a decent ROI

But what ROI in this case? If it get 1 click to the link daily will be huge luck. The OP says 5000 site's visitors - even all they are to the homepage (I don't think so) this is 170 visitors/day.
I agree have people that pays even more, but when the OP thinks it is too good to be true, than it smells.

The niche I'm in is quite lucrative if you can get ranked. The backlink wasn't to give him direct referral traffic but to push him higher up the SERPS (which worked as I checked his keyword rankings). His site runs on affiliiate income like mine. Looking back at this whole transaction, it was a good move by him and I'm sure that his ROI will come through. After all, he's just paid £300 for a backlink on my root page and I'm currently being ranked top 10 for many keywords. Google is keen on my site and will therefore be keen on this backlink. Furthermore, the guy who approached me could see I was carrying out current SEO efforts meaning that this backlink value would grow.
Not bad though considering I first looked into SEO six months ago. £300 I wasn't expecting and I'm hitting targets for my own referral income.
