Yes, he was quite ambitious. Only 35 years old now, and the botnet has been inactive since 2022. Now he's facing 65 years in prison, so.....

Yeah it was definitely not worth it in the end. Though I am sure there are even bigger botnets that are used by government.

Like gamblers, they get hooked, and don't know when to quit.
Get out while you still can if you're running these types of operations.

Not easy to quit that feeling of power though, most of people do not think clearly when have such success in what they do.

Yeah we all believe if we were in this kind of situation, that we would know when to quit. Unfortunately, like most things, it isn't that simple.
This highlights how important good opsec is when engaging in criminal activity. Most criminals, whether cyber or not, get caught by leaving a ton of identifiable evidence.
For example, the Netflix doc on 'Jennifer Han' who hired amateur hitmen to kill her parents is a prime example. The ringleader and the friend who acted as the liaison for the girl used their real number to phone and whatsapp each other. They didn't delete any of the messages discussing the hit. Had this been simply deleted, the police would have been none the wiser.
FYI I don't condone criminal behaviour, only that protecting your identity and digital footprint is in all cases important. (whether criminal or not)

Chinese government helped the international operation to catch this guy and 2 others, so its not nation-funded conspiracy.
Wow, seems like it was a high-level investigation. I wonder how long the investigation lasted before they found them. 911 had been around for a long time.
