some strange experience when sniffing around competitors and this thread.
it really did not help to rank much, as seemed to not pass much juice at all. .

It probably doesn't pass much juice at all... but think about it. There are a TON of places that are high metric, niche, and don't allow any hyperlinks. If you drop a site.com mention on all them you end up with something potentially valuable. As I said before, you'll also get some free traffic limping in.

I don't think they would pass as much juice as hyperlinks but some benefits cant be ruled out.
