Exactly...Do good, receive good. It's as simple as that. And it isn't always monetary compensation either, sometimes it's just that good ole', deep down feeling that can only be experienced from doing the right thing...

As someone who's been (and currently is) homeless, I can't say I would have done the same thing... I grant you, just because no reward is mentioned doesn't mean he didn't get something, but 40k? I'd have taken at -least- 10 and used it to start a new life. If I felt guilty afterwards, I'd have donated most of it to a charity. Or used it to uplift other transients out of poverty. All the same, kudos to him for following his principals. I hope they keeps him warm. >_>

His punishment was not being rewarded. At the time he wasn't rewarded monetarily.

The man, Ethan Whittington, now plans to meet Mr James to give him the money.
"This isn't only about rewarding a great guy. I think it's a statement to everyone in America"
Mr Whittington, who lives in Midlothian, Virginia, said he was so overwhelmed by Mr James' honesty that he decided to start the fund.
"The fact that he's in the situation he is, being homeless, it blew my mind that he would do this,'' Mr Whittington was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
He said his idea of starting donations on a crowd-funding website for Mr James "caught on like wildfire ever since".
"It's brought me a lot of hope. This isn't only about rewarding a great guy. I think it's a statement to everyone in America.
"If we come together and work toward one thing and work together, then we can make it happen."

well, it appears that this good deed was greatly rewarded.
just because a "reward" doesn't appear instantly does not mean that it will never materialize. doing the right thing can benefit many people down the road.

Not sure what it has to do with religion.
Believing in honesty without strings attached meaning having a healthy moral and usually being a good person.
Refraining from being dishonest because there is a chance to be punished in after-life, is like being honest only when a gun is being pointed at your head.
