Check the link profile for successful sites in your niche. You'll find that they have tons of NF links.

What really maters is the quality of your links. If you are having links on important relevant sites and the links are themselves relevant then they will have a long term positive impact on SEO. Always remember while much of your links are not going to be analyzed by humans at Google there's always a chance that your links will be looked over.

Just because your client did a shitty job with GSA nofollow links, it does not mean that Nofollow isn't important.
Seriously, I got a site get rank page 1 just by blog comments. How that work? PURE 100% NOFOLLOW LINKS.

I recently launched a site and got to 70/80 with just no follow blog comments. Did no prior link building from when I registered the domain, 3 months in I made less than 20 links and saw a jump
