This is pretty old. I saw this posted on jonathan volks blog a while ago.

He also mentioned that you could sign up for high PR forums and add a link to your site on your profile.. and then just ping your profile page. Just don't add that link when you sign up.. wait a few days and then add the link.

EDIT: Uhm oh, and i think it's better to use a 1x1 transparent pixel instead of a smiley in your sig line. Moderators will never suspect anytyhing. :)

Does it also give some rankig boosts? (i mean the anchor tag is not the keyword now)

Do I first download a smiley face and than save the smiley face with my website name.
Then when I post on a forum, do I than upload the face

but if this were good to be indexed.. google might want to know where all the links are comming from and they will se smileys. then maybe they might inform the wordpresser or the proper peep what have you, and you could be banned. =bad? maybe..

I don't think Google is in the business of notifying webmasters of in-proper comments and forum posts.

I think if you stay under the radar with this method it can be effective. I think you might get in trouble if you go crazy with XRumer or something and end up with 100k smiley backlinks. Then again, the whole concept of XRumer might get you on the bad side of the big G.
