I'm sure this has been covered countless times on the forum, but I want to make sure I fully understand the basics of SEO.

Let's say my keyword is "how to cut your own hair" and my domain is www.how-to-cut-your-own-hair.com. I want to know if I'm approaching each of these correctly:

Article Writing: I want to write some quality (500+ word) posts on my site which contain my keyword 'how to cut your own hair'. I also want to write some unique, quality articles on other sites that contain my keyword 'how to cut your own hair' and a link to my site. Does it really matter what is being written in these articles? I mean, I get that it is supposed to be related to cutting your own hair, but as long as it is relevant, does quality matter, or do you just need to care about it being unique, and relevant. Also, if I understand correctly, you don't want to put your keyword or link too many times in one article. You want to make it more natural, correct?

Link building: I guess the same applies for link building. I can do so by going on related blogs and commenting with some small phrase like "I learned how to cut your own hair pretty easily at www.how-to-cut-your-own-hair.com". It obviously wouldn't be that obvious and spam like, but I just want to make sure I've got the general idea.

I know this sounds very simple and very basic, but, as helpful as this site is, sometimes it's hard to fully grasp the basics because a lot of posts seem to gloss over the basics and assumes everyone knows it. I've read a lot on the site, but the above techniques are just described as 'blog commenting', 'article submission', etc.. Not many posts go into exactly what needs to be done for blog commenting or article submission.

Sorry for asking something that has probably been covered so many times. I've just recently decided I'm going to take a serious stab at IM and I want to make sure I fully understand the basics before taking action.

Quality sure does matter. Spun content should be stayed away from at all costs on your money site. Remember, the more quality the articles, the more you will engage your traffic for a higher chance to convert. As for link building you have the general idea but remember to go for sites that have authority and have a great foundation as your first tier of sites pointing directly to yours. Article submissions do not seem to be as powerful as they once were and I mainly chose to go with guest posts and web 2.0s for my supporting tier. I mainly stay away from blog commenting, but remember the key is diversification as well as quality. Also make sure to diversify your anchors to stay away from those google animals.

Thank you two for the helpful posts.

Sorry, what do you mean by 'anchor'?

An anchor text is simply the text that is clickable that goes to your website and what it says. You do not want all of those to say one thing, instead make sure you have your brand name in there and URL to your site around 30% of all the links you build.

That is probably something I would want to do in the long run, but, for now, I think I want to grasp the basics by myself, understand what I'm doing, and then when I'm ready to scale, I'll outsource.
