It looks ike youtube has launched a new ranking factor lately, t's a kind of channel authority. If you checked a weight loss niche on youtube 80% of results are from DoctorOz. it's like a page authority google using to rank websites, you always find wikipedia on the first results when you search for something on google. what your thoughts about this new ranking factor?

Not sure, it's too early to make such assumptions

That is hard to believe, it's very hard to do such a change on Youtube.
They tend to like quality and content that get engagement, and if they put authority as a big ranking factor, this will be gone.
Imagine, that new/small channels will have no chance to rank anymore...
Sure, authority matter and it have been like that in the past, but it will not gain more weight then now.
Views, retention, engagement...t\his are the most important factors and in the short future i don't think it will be a big change.

Just checked for a film trailer and branded channels are popping up in results. This is huge change and Youtube will probably crush struggling channels overnight.

The change has been applied 7 months ago, you can find it on YouTube Progress Graphs for DoctorOz on socialblade: https://socialblade.com/youtube/user/doctoroz

I'm not sure if this change has been applied to other niches too

I know what you say, but...
Maybe they start to invest more on marketing...etc.
That spike is not meaning that Youtube change algorithms.
You can check other "authority" channels and see if they got a spike at that time.
I din't find any related growths an the same period.
But, who knows...

I wouldn't believe that YT will play an authority game.
There is a simple reason to crush the OP statement.

Money.

Ranking factors are pretty transparent, due two reasons.
1. To let people control what they watch using stats of new/old videos and user keywords.
2. To make more money for the company.

Edit: So, the company who want it will learn and do what it takes to get to the desired spot.

In a call with investors on Monday, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, said the company would continue to invest more in algorithms on YouTube, following recent incidents that saw the platform offering misinformation, hate speech, and disturbing content targeting children. He also promised to continue to address user privacy concerns.

“User expectations around privacy are constantly evolving and we stretch ourselves to meet them,” he said. “We will have more changes over the course of the year.”

This number represents the total number of videos inYouTube about that topic. The higher this number, the more competitive a keyword is. So you want to target keywords that have a low “About results” number. So if I was just starting out, I'd try a few other keywords, like “YouTube ranking factors”.

Not a smart move by Google. Daily amateur video bloggers will suffer badly because of this. YouTube is popular because of content created by non-pro individuals!!
