New or used domain?

Hello BHW.
I was thinking of buying a domain for my website, and I found some suitable ones, but they have been used in the past. I'mt afraid if I get one of those I might have trouble ranking, because I don't know if they had been penalised in the past. What would you do?

And what all things to look for, when getting a used Domain
 
check wayback machine and use ahrefs as a starting point. there are many more things to look at, but this should give you a basic idea.
 
check "site:domain name" to see if is indexed, check the wayback archive for chinese anchors, check the RD of sites
 
There's absolutely no point in hand-registering a new domain when starting a venture that involves search engines/SEO as a means of driving traffic.

Why get a new one when you can get a premium, indexed, aged, niche/industry relevant domain powered by authority links and even relevant traffic?

I suggest you start exploring the domains aftermarket; it's a huge competitive advantage when done right.

You shouldn't have any issue, but as others said, check domain history.
