I've been working with a company for a while, initially just as a web developer, now doing some SEO for them. Through being a genuinely good website with relevant content, the existing website has made it to #1 for a couple of search phrases in the form "location keyword" even though the keyword isn't in the domain, just the location. However for some of the long tail search phrases we're quite far behind.

The owner bought a new domain name which contains location and keyword. This is good.

What I'm trying to figure out is if I should just rebrand the money site using this new and likely better domain, or if I should use the new domain as a feeder site and try rank it up for some of the long tail search phrases. Currently we have zero feeder sites.

What do you think?
