New Google Update January 2020

Almost all the websites I track have very similar backlinking strategies. When 90% of the tracked websites see positive growth, you have to look at what they all have in common. That is the most glaring commonality. I understand that correlation doesn't imply causation, but sometimes you have to make assumptions based off the patterns you see in the data.

Also, the December update saw very little movement with the sites I track. The sites that did get hit (negatively), usually had some glaring issue with their on-page...e.g - page load speeds, which Google is putting a HUGE emphasis on recently.

Would you shed some light about your backlinking strategy then? It feels like you're doing smth right

If you don't mind, could you please explain the details about your backlinking strategy? So if possible i want to follow to recover my site :D

January 2020 Core Update has been stealing the heart and sleep of Webmasters all across the globe. This is an evaluation-based update and as usual the details are yet to roll out!

Backlinks are/have

1. medium/high authority sites
2. relevancy (contextually and/or from site level)
3. at least some traffic
4. quality link profiles (and upstream)
5. mostly stay away from low level backlinks.

Nothing ground breaking here and honestly, with a massive forum full of SEOs, it's astonishing that I even have to write this.

Fun fact: A competitor of mine literally have GSA blast as T1 and got a huge boost, meanwhile I have HQ backlinks and got a bit of a drop.

Meh, outlier...and I never said that other types of link building don't work (even the shittiest of links), cause they (sometimes) do. I'm simply sharing the data I see. Time and time again, we've seen that bad link building strategies aren't what are best for the longevity of your website's rankings. Can they work in the short term? Sure...but if you want to build an asset that stands the test of time, the strategy above will almost always be your best bet. This shouldn't be anything we all don't know in 2020.

I didn't say that you said lower quality links won't help. I know, I know - Of course higher quality links will be better than spam, I think everyone here knows this. And when people ask you for your "linkbuilding strategy" they're probably just wondering if you're going for HQ PBNs/GPs/Niche edits, and if so, are they niche related, do they have traffic and so on and so forth. You have access to a lot more data than I do, this is a fraction of yours. I didn't mean anything negative about it, as I said; "fun fact".. Also, the site is 3 years old and not really short term. It was almost dying out from the October update but is now getting a huge boost with the most ridiculous anchor ratio and backlink portfolio.

And I don't think people here DON'T know that quality matters, but if for example people with HQ backlinks got hit in this update and spammy got a boost, it's worth to ask, no?

Anyway, it's all love here.

No issues on my end for this update. Though I rarely do BH work anyways.

Moral : Its all just speculations about the area websites got it.

Just out of curiosity, has Google put YouTube videos into the top 3 for your niche or is it still article content? A friend has a similar traffic drop but in his niche the top 3 are now videos rather than articles with his page now being in 4th place still being the first article for the keyword in the SERP.
No, no youtube videos on first page for most keywords.

The only problem I have after all these latest updates is my VPS. Have to upgrade it again. It can't handle the amount of traffic. :)

Guys, this update has nothing to do with quality links. Because I have not built/bought any links in either 2018 or 2019.
Speaking about 20+ websites here. Not a single one got hit. The biggest sites all grew in traffic. The small remained the same.
This makes me believe the update is authority/brand/content related.

Maybe sites with low quality links are penalized, but definitely having or not having quality links has no impact as far as we speak about these latest updates.

One of my site hit so hard by this update. it's getting worse every single day. Traffic drop by 60% RIP.

I just hit #1 for an insanely competitive niche with high $$$. Hopefully nothing comes of the new changes

One of my big keyword I was working on, which was dropped in december from 17th to to nowhere now came back today to 17th again, and also see some movement on other kws..
I can't follow whats happening anymore, but I'm sure it's still dancing...

For me i never did any backlink nor buy any backlinks so far my site is keeps growing i'm just gonna keep it as it is
