This is awful when it happens. Had the same problem back in November. Went from 6k clicks to 3k and its been slowly falling. The last few weeks have shown a minor recovery but I am thinking of throwing in the towel now. Keeping up with these updates is costing so much time and money that it isnt worth it anymore.

Hmm.. i really didn't used search console on this one and submitted 10 times another site.. the first one recovered while the second not! Maybe you're right about google hating abuse of sesrch console!!
As for the title, here is my example:
Before homepage title: BrandName: Download Music for Free
Affer Homepage Title: Brandname: Your favorite Music Site
Something like that. And p.s. site went back first this morning.. 0 other changes!

Track around 250 websites. Almost all green over here, with huge gains for many of my clients. This update was Penguin-esque and definitely had to do with the quality of links. Still going over all the data, but that is what I have so far.

I am not sure about that, I have some websites with almost 0 links, some are hit and others still good. It's like random

There is always an element of randomness..this is part of Google FUD. I'm simply making assumptions based off of my data and that's what it is telling me.

Just out of curiosity, has Google put YouTube videos into the top 3 for your niche or is it still article content? A friend has a similar traffic drop but in his niche the top 3 are now videos rather than articles with his page now being in 4th place still being the first article for the keyword in the SERP.
What makes you think that this update is backlink-related? Cause I have the same feeling...

Almost all the websites I track have very similar backlinking strategies. When 90% of the tracked websites see positive growth, you have to look at what they all have in common. That is the most glaring commonality. I understand that correlation doesn't imply causation, but sometimes you have to make assumptions based off the patterns you see in the data.
Also, the December update saw very little movement with the sites I track. The sites that did get hit (negatively), usually had some glaring issue with their on-page...e.g - page load speeds, which Google is putting a HUGE emphasis on recently.
