Interesting idea. Not sure what Google would think on that, but I believe 1 of 2 things would happen:
1) Google spiders your backlinks and comes to an error page when following to your unregistered domain and doesn't count any of your links.
2) Google spiders your spammed backlinks, but because your domain is not yet registered, you don't get blacklisted or banned. Google counts all the backlinks and, when you do register, you find your domain indexed and setting in a nice place in the SERPs.

that's an interesting idea, but my first thought is that some slick domainer tool or scanner would discover the fact that there's thousands of backlinks pointing to an unregistered domain -- and it would get scooped up by someone else pretty quick.

I had a similar idea that I have yet to test out... What if you NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW'd your domain and blasted it with xrumer or something? Then removed the tag afterwards? Anyone ever try it?
I imagine Google will come back eventually and then re-credit the links - just like if a website's hosting expired and they didn't renew it for 2-3 weeks... the site then comes back online and their listing eventually gets put back.

Or why dont you try registering the domain, not pointing it to a webserver, and then spamming the links. If you dont register it then theres always a possibility of some other nob-jockey registering it before you.

not everyone believes that spamming backlinks is even possible.
If I start spamming Match.com with back links, will I get them kicked out?

Wouldn't the spider pick up the link as soon as the site was hosted? I thought (??) that it crawled over everything again, links included? (which is why to make something look like "new" content you can change title, some wording, and layout).

Google would calculate the results rank for relevant keywords based on content and backlinks once the site was available for indexing. This is no different than if a site with backlinks was taken down for a time, then put back up.
The age of the domain is a factor, however, the content and quantity/quality of backlinks is by far the primary condition for a site ranking for a specific keyword/phrase.
The best thing to do would be the opposite... register the domain, throw some temporary content in place and build backlinks to it if you can't create a good site right away. At least this way you'd have the domain age in your favor and can later create real content.
I've done this many times. I incubate new sites which I don't have time to fully develop at the moment with temporary content and later come back and develop them into real sites. Almost always, the site's ranking and traffic jumps shorty after adding real content to the site.
