well is not about money and cheap domain , I was tempted by the price aka discount.
but after my card has been charge they ask .

providing a digital copy of one of the following:

Driver's License
State ID
Passport
National ID

and so so complicated question.
wtf what did i signup for?

so beware

namecheap does too if they suspect something. Its not a scam, its normal practice.

It is not close to normal - 1and1 is one of the worst companies out there with whom to do business.

Their support is terrible. But I went through the same thing with namecheap and i had an account there for years. As someone who has worked in CC processing that is super normal for anti fraud in high risk especially with new customers.

While I'm not a fan of 1and1 either, I don't see how asking you to ID verifiy yourself makes it a scam ;)

I bought my first domains at 1&1 and had no real problems, but their support is relatively poor and their prices are high. I'm much happier at namecheap now.
 
They probably want those documents so they can send them to the bill collectors when you choose not to renew your domain name. 1and1 is one of the worst companies I've ever had the displeasure of doing business with. Never again.
 
I had a bad experience too with 1and1. So complicated process even just to buy a domain. Its .COM discount is really tempting but I canceled it and get from Namecheap and Namesilo instead. The last two processed my purchase really quick.

Totally agree.

Even tho others also ask for verification sometimes, 1 and 1 is just the worst, definitely avoid them!

Don't get me wrong, I know we're just talking opinions here, but in my experience, GoDaddy sucks hard. I mean, if you like upsells, $15 .coms and $10 domain privacy, then I guess GoDaddy isn't that bad.

Currently have debt collectors after me because 1and1 tried to charge my credit card for hosting that I cancelled over a year before. I actually think they're so bad that there should be a sticky on BHW advising not to do business with them. They're pure garbage.
 
I wanted to get a 1and1 service but you guys changed my mind, whats my other options?
 
BUT 1and1 still persists to this day because they are not in the red, unlike most of our bhe ventures. That means they're doing something right
 
I wouldn't recommend 1and1 either, did the same thing for me quite long time ago.
