There is a mistake. 7.8 average is based on 18 students, not 20. Following this approach, answer would be ((7.8*18) + 10)/20 = 7.52

I'm a government-employed high school maths teacher. Been teaching for the last two years.
To calculate the average of the 20 students given the average of 18 students, you'll have to know how many marks the extra two students got. There's just no other way around that, unless what you're looking for is an assumption and not a spefic answer.

The problem with this ia that you have found the average of the upper and lower limits.

Tell us what is grade range, is it from 0 to 10 or from 5 to 10? Some countries have 5 grade for failing, and 6-10 for passing grade.

Yea, dealing with kids can be tough, man. Being a teacher requires that you wear many different hats, not just knowing how to deliver content.

Oh boy, I feel you. I have few friends who are math teachers. It's the worst profession, because you are trying to teach things to people who don't want to learn. It's pointless, students don't care or want to know. And those who want to know usually don't need teacher at all, as they are ahead of the program. Students who love math get ahead of the curve, because high school math is pretty basic for those interested and talented for it.

He started substituting while getting his degree in the late 80's, retired in 2016 before the state/district could rip more of his retirement package away.
