This is called a membership site and we have created multiple for members here in the forum. The trick is to build solething with enough permissions and features to make the user experience smoother.

I doubt with square space you would be able to achieve that stuff, it would require custom coding

Correct, that's what I recommended to op via PM. Although not sure if he would like to go the Wordpress road.

Don't build this on sqaurespace, not cost effective and probably not possible without doing a lot of workarounds.
