Need some advice on hosting

Most of the times the shared hosting you purchase is hosted on a powerful server which can fulfill all needs (but yes, it's not good all the time), but when you upgrade to a VPS that will not be as powerful as your previous server so of course you will face much problems if you are getting high traffic. I will suggest you to go back to shared hosting or upgrade to a powerful vps (which will be much costly).

Wordpress base sites need more resouces so try to increase the Ram of your hosting vps.

Namecheap hosting best, am also use this since a year. no down time.

No offense Tom, but you are wrong, Shared Hosting is way more limited (IOs/ CPU time/ RAM usage) than an Virtual Private Server . What you are saying would be correct only IF on the node where the shared account is are not more than 20 other accounts (or they have low traffic). The resource vps with cpu 3 cores and 5gb ram. 500mbps transfer speed (as stated from OP) are enought to carry such amount of traffic (and like twice more!). The problem is mostlikely lack of proper configuration. I'm pretty sure that if he was getting this traffic on regular shared account the provider would had send him friendly invitation to move on VPS.

Once again, I will advise you @Hawkster to invest some time on doing some proper Apache/MySQL optimized configuration. (Also I suggest you to switch from Apache to Litespeed or use NGINX as proxy of Apache). And again, contact your provider to investigate it.

How much traffic a day should that be able to handle in your opinion?

Ive had nothing but problems with the server going down since upgrading from shared and its beginning to really piss me off.

Right now my server is down after reaching 7k visitors for the day.

Hey Hawkster - we have our TV streaming site hosted with Go Daddy on a VPS - 4Gb of ram - not sure about CPU but we serve about 20k pages a day and only ever get to about 10% of RAM usage and less than 2% of CPU power.
I did the calcs the other day and had worked out that we could serve about 250k pages a day before we would have to start looking at upgrading..
