Im with @Hostwinds on a premium vps with cpu 3 cores and 5gb ram. 500mbps transfer speed.

How much traffic a day should that be able to handle in your opinion?

Ive had nothing but problems with the server going down since upgrading from shared and its beginning to really piss me off.

Right now my server is down after reaching 7k visitors for the day.

7 thousand visitors should not cause issues for even shared hosting.

I have sites that get double that on shared hosting with no blips at all.

What kind of site is it? If you're serving up mainly text then there shouldn't be a problem at all with what you got.

I'm guessing it is not the metrics of the VPS but rather an issue with that VPS itself.

Typical for hostwinds. Happened the same to me and went with another provider.

If it had more uptime on a shared server, it sounds like the new server just isn't optimized yet. What's the current configuration?

Without any insights, maybe start by configuring Nginx as a reverse proxy for Apache, with MPM Worker and PHP-FPM.

Check your logs and maybe you can find out when and why it goes wrong.

There's no magic formula for figuring out how much horsepower you're going to need. Put together as much info about your expected traffic as you can, and contact the sales folks at HG for some advice. The nice thing about VPS, however, is that you can start at a low level, and see how it goes. If it turns out to be not robust enough to handle your traffic, you can move up to the next level easily.

What language is your site in? php? I had a client's site go do as soon as it hit 5K visitors, so I increased his memory limit and it helped.

There are a lot of factors that influence. Also, X visitors per day is the wrong thing to measure here.
You should look at the server power in terms of how many concurrent users can visit your website at the same time.

You can do stress tests for your servers using loader.io (they also have a free plan methinks)

7000 is like peanuts for your server if setup properly.

I am sure concurrent users figures will show the real picture here.

NGINX+Memcache can help the server handle the traffic quite smoothly.

I def agree with what everyone is saying above, your VPS should def be able to handle that specific amount of traffic.

Would be nice if you could give us more information regarding your VPS configuration/ Control panel you are using . Also block the traffic from china if your target is not that country . VPS need proper configuration in order to match the right one for your traffic and resources. Contact the support of hostwinds to take a look on your VPS configuration .

Depending on the type of scripts, plugins and memory you use.
Hosting is not only calculated from the amount of traffic, but the load on the server hosting
