Hello i want to know how to do SEO for a College website... like link building and all and how to improve the ranking of keywords...

Follow these suggestions:
1. Actively participate in forums related to education and studies.
2. Focus on social media optimization (maintain and update your college's Facebook, Twitter and other social accounts).
3. Follow the backlinks of your competitors (i.e. backlinks of other college's websites).

^ agree with the above. Might also be good idea to build a collaborative blogging platform that encourages students to blog and then link back to the main college site? Try to utilise the very large resource that you have (students).
1. make sure you link your college website with all the authority websites of the locality.
2. in this college things, local SEO is most important.
3. you need inlinks for website from the same territory or something like that.
4. get your site listed on all local college directories. i believe there would be many.
5. Get quality highly unique content after doing multiple plagiarism check and publish it on the official blog.
6. Interact with local audience on social media.

Start with ON Page SEO in which you need to remove all errors on the behalf of SEO... Like Title, Meta description, Alternate text, HTML errors, etc... It will help you to improve or indexing your website in Google.
Then start Off Page SEO in which you will start building back links... You can use techniques as below:-
1) Article Marketing
2) Document Sharing
3) Forum Posting
4) Blog Submissions
5) Blog Commenting....
