Hi, Apologies if this is the wrong forum to ask this. I’m new to Meta Ads and currently running sales campaigns for my perfume and soap business in India.

At the ad set level, I’ve set the message destination to Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, since that’s where I connect with customers and take orders. The campaign uses the Highest Volume bid strategy with the performance goal set to maximize the number of conversations, and there’s no cost cap.

I’m running two campaigns with the same setup but slightly different targeting:

  • Campaign 1: Targets people interested in cosmetics, fragrances, and beauty, with the “Engaged Shoppers” behavior.
  • Campaign 2: Targets only the “Engaged Shoppers” behavior.

Each campaign includes 4 image ads and 1 video ad showing clear product images, offers, USPs, and a call-to-action.

The issue is that almost all the messages I receive are spam or irrelevant. Most are from agencies offering to “boost my sales,” or people who don’t even know why they reached out.

When users click on my ad in facebook/instagram they land on my WhatsApp or Messenger, they get an automated greeting that explains the current offer and asks if they want to place an order or have a query. But the responses I get are things like “How did you get my number?” or “We can help you sell on Amazon.” I haven’t received a single genuine enquiry yet. i am not using any plugins for automated messages, this is the meta's chat builder feature.

Another strange thing is that, even though I’ve explicitly selected Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp as message destinations, I’m also getting messages on Instagram, and they’re being counted as “conversations” in the Meta Ads dashboard. Could this be happening because my Facebook Page is linked to my Instagram account?

It’s quite demotivating, and I’m trying to understand what’s going wrong. Any guidance would be appreciated.

The best fix is to add validation before anyone can contact you and restrict who sees a chat option, or switch to a lead form

Too broad/general targeting: “Buyers who have interacted” is a very broad audience. Anyone can perform this behavior. Agencies or service providers are included.
Lack of exclusion criteria (Exclusions): You should exclude unwanted audiences from the beginning.

I have added location exclusions but i dont see any exclusion option in interest or behaviour targeting. Any way to do this? Thanks

IF your campaign setup includes Instagram and FB
Change to IG only, FB ads from third world nations ain't performing anymore except for very few items

Change to IG and use the IG message to WhatsApp method
Costlier..but you would see improvement

Yes, your Facebook Page being linked to Instagram is why you’re getting Instagram messages counted as conversations it’s normal behavior.

I think the broad targeting might be pulling in a lot of random people, and the automated greeting might not be filtering them out well enough. Maybe try narrowing the audience or tweaking the message to weed out the spammers. And yeah, the Instagram thing happens because your page is linked, so it’s counting those too.

Switch to sales or lead objective with form filtering and tighten targeting plus yes IG messages count since accounts are linked

Messenger and WhatsApp ads are magnets for bots in India. Switch to a 'Leads' objective with an Instant Form and add a custom question to filter out the junk—it forces people to be intentional before they can message you.

That’s an issue with your targeting. Please adjust your targeting settings and the age range that can see your ads.
