Hey everybody,

I recently started trying to do some offline marketing selling webdesign and hosting. I have a hot lead, but I want some feedback on some pricing I may propose to the client for content creation. Just a note, this person is not stupid, has been on a project setting up a web page for a previous company that used technical writers for their content. This is also my first hot lead, and if I get the business it will give me the funds I need to really get going.

This client has 11 topics that require *real business knowledge to write - this is probably MBA level stuff that will be dumbed down a bit for the website.

I looked up the mean hourly wage for a technical writer, and it was about $35 per hour. I figured in a 20% markup so my hourly charge to the customer would be $42 (although I am not charging hourly, I am charging a flat rate for a package deal). I also figure that if I write these myself (I may outsource, haven't decided), it will take me 3 hours to write for one topic (500-700 words) which includes research time.

I won't bore you with the excel calculations (customer charge = hours * topics * hourly rate), but I have come up with the following packages to offer the client:

Packages
11 pages (one for each topic, being 500-700 words): $1386
6 pages (each page will cover 2 topics, 250-350 words per topic): $756
3 pages (4 topics on each page, with a brief description paragraph): $378

What do you guys think? Here are a few more notes: I think I am under priced but I need the business. I am also not trying to gouge the client on the price, I want to offer something that is fair market for both of us. I am not willing to work for nothing, I will walk away before that happens. The client is in business consulting dealing with C-Levels. I checked odesk but of course those prices are low because they are trying to outsource to other markets.

need feedback.

Thanks,

Lumien

PS.

I'm in a metro city & ran into a content writer. They charge about $250 per page. I'm assuming that is about 500 words. I typically charge that rate for technical stuff: Attorney, Dentist, etc.

So I would tell him I usually charge $250 per page (500-700 words), but I'm willing to set up a deal (because I like you or some other flattering reason) & then lay out the prices you laid out above.

Lots of funny people here...I don't go under $1,000 for 500 words article.

Qu4rk: thanks

skyocketseo: well I was pitching a "redesign" (just selling them the template and putting it up) for the standard $500 that is always posted in this section of BHW. While I understand that content is a lot of work, trying to charge the client $11k seems a bit much. They already know I am just starting out, and don't really have a portfolio. I unfortunately have a very thorough client, or else I wouldn't have let them know that :)

I'm not saying 11K is wrong (I mean, I am the one asking for help here), but what kind of area/clients are you selling to? Is your business financially stable enough to pitch that as a quote and then walk away from the majority of people who can't pay it? Unfortunately I am not yet in that position.

Is 1 article really WORTH $1000, or is that just what you can get people that are uneducated to pay you?

Thanks for the replies, keep them coming.

lovekizi90: So you would charge $1k per 500 words, plus $250 per page? So total for 11 pages would be $13750?

anyone else have other views? I don't want to bump needlessly but I need to get a quote to the client either today or tomorrow, so i'm desperately looking for as much feedback as possible.

Thanks,

Lumien

I was being sarcastic,of course, seeing what all these newbs are talking about. If you want 1st grade content written by a US native writer Pm me. I have a team of professional writers and we can cover any topic you want. And no, I won't ask more than $40/500 words

SkyrocketSEO: I tried to PM you but your box is full. Whats another way to contact you?
