Hello everyone,
So I'm Working for a company and I'm Doing some SEO work right now. I have a question for everyone who is familiar with SEO, Keyword ranking. So my situation is as such: I had to create a new website for the company I am working for. There's already an existing site and has been there for years but is very minimalistic hence why I made a new site. Now my problem is this, the old site is outranking the new one in both traffic and keywords. I need to know wether its better to just delete the old site and backlink the shit out of the new site or just simply have a redirect from the old site to the new one. Any suggestions or advice would be wonderful. Thanks everyone!

Keep the old one and Give 301 redirect to the new site, Make good quality Back links to both the New and old site.
This helps you to get traffic to your site.
 
Do not delete the old one. Keeping that site will show your company's former activities. Just put back links from old to new one.
 
You should not delete the old site and keep the 301 redirect to your new site. Even the domain name of your old site is popular. The visitors visit the old domain, it is an advantage to visit your new site by this redirect.

It can help you to increase your site rank by build backlinks of both new and old site as the other members said.

The keywords for old domain as in new domain makes the old domain ranking in 1st or 2nd page in google.
 
You can make a redirect 301 from old to the new site because you can get the same ranking or somewhat low or high.
Because in old domains you may have a more InBound Links(IBL)it will help you further on new site too.
But,if you think that the old site will not have quality links you can smash it and build a new site.
 
Don't delete the old one. Just put a 301 redirect to your site.
Google looks for aged domain too.
If your old domain has a lot of visitors, if you put redirect you get visitors to your new site.

See thats what I want to do but the owner of this company I'm working for see's the old site as something worth keeping active but its outdated
 
Yea I researched about the 301 redirect and thats what I want to do but she still sees the old site as something to stay active (which i disagree). so my question is how can I outrank a 5-6 year old site that has control over the keywords i wish to rank the new site for... I'm really pressing her to redirect it because that would solve all the issues but in the meantime is there anything else i can do?
 
You should have redesigned the old site instead of creating a new one.

301 the old domain to the new one, start aggressively creating robust content and links for the new domain.

Or redesign the old. Expand and add fresh content to the old while redirecting the new domain.
 
Thanks mbreezy. I think I'm going to continue adding content and links on the new site then 301 the old domain to the new once the new site is... well "maximized". For 2 keywords, and I'm using SEMrush and serpfox to get this info, the new site is consisrently ranked 4th while the old site is ranked 1. And this data has been consistent for the past month since I've started to monitor this info.
 
Why didn't you just change the old site's look/theme?

I actually don't have access to it nor does my boss. The person who set that old site up (5 years ago) put the login info in his name and he left the company on very bad terms. The site is a mess anyways and would be easier to just redirect the traffic and 301 that old site to the new. There has been alot of time and effort (by me) put into the new site too.
