Need Advice On a CMS

Hi Guys,

I need advice on a good content management system. Up until now I have mainly used wordpress as a CMS and it has worked fine with small sites (200-2000 visitors per month).

I am wanting to put together a large, financial site which I hope will get 30k plus visitors a month after 15 months or so.

I am happy to carry on using wordpress but want to know if it is capable of handling this kind of traffic. In terms of what I need from the site I think wordpress can handle it..

The site will have a few price comparison sections, product reviews etc but other than that will be guides to the products themselves.

Is wordpress ok for this a site this size or are there more suitable platforms? Bear in mind I know only html, css and a bit of php. Happy to learn more depending on the entry level but ideally would like something as straight forward.

For me Wordpress is the best CMS .. I am running few WP websites with 50k visits a month and they are working fine.
 
I think wordpress is just fine for large traffic sites. Just take a look at news sites like mashget, they run on wp with no apparent problems. If you are worried about performance though, check out solutions like WP Super Cache and eAccelerator, those two will help BIG TIME!
 
Unbelievable but I have very similar situation these days. I want to make a bigger and complex site and up until now I used wordpress for smaller sites and I got really experienced. I really really like wordpress but to be honest I don't think it's best solution for complex sites. I mean wordpress is great and it really doesn't matter how many traffic or how many content you have it will still work good. The problem I have that I am starting to use different CMS is because I have some expectations from my new site that WP can't live up to. That is why I will probably decide to go with Drupal. I've heard from some experienced people that Drupal is great CMS for more advanced web sites. So if your only concerns are amount of content and visitors you don't need to stop using Wordpress, just plan ahead and make a nice design, nobody will notice it's wordpress. On the other hand if you have some more complex things to do with website check Drupal. I must warn you it's a more complex than WP so for WP users transition may be painful.

Thanks very much for all your advice once again confirming my faith in wordpress.

If wordpress is suitable for this kind of site then I'm happy to continue using it, although I'll probably get a bespoke theme designed eventually.

I've thought about Drupal and Joomla but I'm not sure if I need to go down that route now. It's not a membership site or anything complex like that - it's a content site, so loads of financial guides and a couple of product pages (which dont require feeds or anything like that) so I just need a CMS.
 
Drupal, Wordpress, or e107.

Joomla is too vulnerable to exploits.

for complex sites it's highly recommendable to switch over an advanced CMS ( drupal / vivvo ... ) wordpress is good and working well it's true , but it's just simple ... I`ve tested till now drupal vivvo and joomla , unfortunately joomla I find it very buggy and I heard loads of horror stories about them , drupal it's just very complicated ( till you learn the hierarchy ) , vivvo even if is payd , it's seems working just fine , and quite easy to learn the curve ...
 
I have a lot of Joomla sites and never had a security issue.

Let put it this way, in my opinion for smaller sites WP is better (also because you have some boost immediatly in SE rankings), but for a long-term project with a more complex site I'd go with Joomla.
 
i would go for MODx, it is a very nice CMD that is very intuitive not like joomla and drupal...
 
I use Netvolution by Atcom on my site. Excellent CMS though it's not an open source. Fully Seo optimised.

If you need a simple and straightforward backoffice, wordpress is the way to go. If you need a lot of features exactly for your needs, go for custom made. It will beat any CMS with one hand behind the back. but that's just me since I'm a coder :P
 
Hey, me too. I AM working on the same very thing...funny. Anyways, for me I have checked out the Top 3 choices WP, J and D and I believe I will just stick with WP since I know it so well. I'm not into any BIG learning curves at the moment so this is the basis for my decision to stick with what I know...and yeah WP can handle whatever you give it! You can drive wordpress certainly with that sum of traffic without any problems ,I have one site based on wordpress that have 600 k visitors per month and working great just install WP Super Cache..You can also try joomla or drupal

Personally , if thats the kind of volume you are looking at I would go with Drupal. With increase in volume I am sure you would need to add features to it.Part of expansion i would say.

In that regards, WP isnt flexible enough to allow that , Joomla! is not robust enough for it. Drupal on the other hand , is a lil expensive to make but way easier to scale and grow.
 
Surprisingly I was thinking from switching from my custom coded CMS to a public one today due to one of my sites getting big, to be honest I'll be going with Joomla .After researching about Joomla, most of the security issues arise from idiots not write protecting their files, or plugins creating vulnerabilities, and CMS XSS exploits, just use cron jobs to backup files/mysql db on a regular basis incase anything happens.
