Hi thought I would give my two pennies worth also. Some good points above.
This is what I do for a living, I work as an IT manager and tackle viruses all day long
As lensman said you can spend many hours trying to rid this infection and if it has infected the running windows process files and drivers then it can be very difficult to remove. What I would suggest with a very badly infected machine would be to make a full backup of the hard drive with Acronis ( in work I have a workshop machine I connect the customers hard drive to and create the image to that. ) The once you have verified the image is ok and the files are accessible then format it and reinstall your OS. Once you have done that install all the windows updates and then create a folder on the desktop. I would now install a good AV and firewall. Comodo Internet Security offer a good free solution and it also has a sandbox feature
Once done mount the image of the backup you created and copy the folders and files back accross to your new system. Any files that are corrupt or infected will be stopped at this point. The only headache you will have now is having to install all your programs again but to speed that process up a little try a neat little app called ninite
