my competitor ddos me

What is he DDOSing? You own server? Or VPS? The general rule is that you need more connectivity than your attacker, than you can still access your server and use iptables or whatever to cut off the attacker. Executing successful DDOS on a server placed in decent server housing facility is not easy and takes a lot of resources, preferably large botnet which is not something you can easily get your hands on. I would probably try to resolve this with your server/VPS provider.

Like others have suggested, you should sign up with Cloudflare. They're cheap and effective.

log files, see where the requests are coming from (IP address)
So you say you know that competitor ddoses you
So he is ddosing yo ufrom his main server using 1 ip?
I just can't understand how you know who exactly is ddosing you

If he uses 1 IP it's not DDOS :D

Why don't you just block his IP or several most used IPs if you know them ?

As i said i dont have any evidences, nobody uses his own ip for ddos, tousands ip's are used from a botnet. I just know its a competitor because the server chosen to be attacked (its a dedicated one in a first class datacenter), we have 7 dedicated servers in different countries, because the timing chosen, and other logical signs. It was a 24 hours attack, now its over, the server is back on. Actually, my question should be more something like should i declare a war and ddos back ( i have made some researches, its easy and cheap) or better concentrate on business?

of course not, people aren't stupid :)
if u get DDoS your server crashes, thats how u know u are being DDoS'd - but to find out "WHO" is doing it is another level of knowledge ;)
