You should try to update content for first site as well now. May be it will also regain lost rankings . Do share the result with us because lot of other members also affected by that update.

How often you update?
 
There are tens of metrics that cause rise and fall of sites after updates. Content freshness is one of them. If you test the same strategy for your first site, you'll find out more.

What do you mean by it was wiped out ? and then survived ? That means it was out of index and then you changed content and its back ? I am pretty sure its not that simple once the website is penalized. You sometimes need to change the whole structure, clean it up from top to bottom.

How do you know that only this factor was the reason ? There can be other factors involved as well.
