I have 2 competitors, for a low-medium competition keyword and both of them are ranking higher, at position 5 and 6, but they have no backlinks and very basic websites.

What gives?

thanks.

(when i say zero backlinks, i mean less than 5 - and none of them are good backlinks)

How new is their site and what is their DA?

thanks for reply.

They both sites are around 2-3 years old.

Mine is around 5 months.

Their DA is 12 and 15 respectively.

My DA is 27.

They might be hiding their backlinks .

age and history with google. Google has more data about the sites, their visitors and how they interact with the site, their social media, citation etc. It not only backlinks.

hidden 301s / hidden links - high possibility for both

i dont think so :/

very basic websites not very active, dont think theyd go through the effort of that..

I find it hard to believe that they aren't simply hiding their backlinks.

What is the keyword competition anyway?

These are local so you the KWs are local, "Dallas Dentists" or some such thing?

Could very well be onsite then.

Thanks for the help I appreciate it.

Yes exactly... i.e - "dentist dallas" "dentist in dallas" "dallas dentist"

When you say on page, you mean content etc?

URLS???? Onsite SEO can make a big difference.

Also there is always someone on here going on about social media, such a crock of brown stuff cough, cough.

Content, <h> tags, company name address phone on the site, interlinking on site, proper image SEO, the whole nine yards. My guess is that is where they are kicking you as that is the first thing I look at when I do SEO for a local client.

If it's a keyword that can make them a good sum of money, they'd go to the effort of doing anything.

As BTB has said, I would take a real good look at the onsite SEO including all of the above, the URL length and words included in it. Always strip everything back to the most basic form and build up from there. Remember Google is all but an algorithm - it isn't anywhere near as powerful as we can be lead to belive by all of THEIR marketing hype.
